BIOGRAPHICAL DATA:
Elizabeth L. Lascoutx, Director of the Children's Advertising Review Unit, began her career at CARU as its staff attorney in January 1991. In May 1994 she became the Acting Director until her promotion to Director in 1995. Ms. Lascoutx was named a vice president of the Council of Better Business Bureaus in February 1997.

She led CARU's comprehensive revisiting of its Self-Regulatory Guidelines for Children's Advertising in 1996 to include the new online media and children's privacy. These "Guidelines for Interactive Electronic Media" ultimately formed the much of basis for the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA).

In March 1999 Ms. Lascoutx was honored with the first annual "Cyberangel of the Year" award by Cyberangels, the largest online education and safety organization. In April 1999 she was named to the US National Action Committee of UNESCO's worldwide Internet safety project, Innocence in Danger.

A graduate of Barnard College and Fordham University School of Law, Ms. Lascoutx worked for two years as a partner in a general practice law office after receiving her JD in 1977. She was a sole practitioner in general law from 1980 to 1991, concentrating for the last three of those years on custody and divorce mediation. Her mediation experience has proven to be particularly valuable in working with advertisers to resolve conflicts with CARU's guidelines.
