I am a new customer from Lubbock. My service doesn't begin until next month. Never the less, I just want to say that during this sign-up period, the Champion reps have gone over and above to get me the best deal possible. I am completely satisfied at this point. I have recommended Champion to several friends and family.Champion Energy Services Response

They use fraudulent and predatory practices to get customers to sign up. The representative literally lied to get me to sign up. They attract people in stores by giving them gift cards and not telling people they are signing a long term contract with high cancellation fees. They gave me no paperwork when I signed up it was done through a tablet. Then they sent a recording of a call that was not the complete call but clearly edited. Do not use this company!Champion Energy Services Response

Natasha, thank you for providing Champion with your feedback. The actions you describe are inconsistent with Champion’s business practices as neither Champion nor Champion’s third-party marketers offer gift cards and neither typically perform in-person enrollments. Please contact [email protected] to provide us with more information about your interaction so that we can better understand your experience and take the necessary steps to ensure Champion’s practices are being followed? We appreciate your assistance.Review from Ana A

I am very disappointed in Champion energy and how much my bill has risen these past few months. During the summer my bill used to be $150- $200 and now it is around $400- $650. When I called to set up a payment plan, I was denied because my bill was not past due yet. I was forced to wait until it was overdue, and I called again to set up a payment plan but was denied. Stated that my bill was past due and that I needed to wait until I got a disconnection letter. Again, being forced to wait again I called again when I got the letter. I was then denied again, and I cannot do anything because I got the disconnection letter. I think it is unfair that Champion energy does this to its customers instead of helping them. It demonstrates that Champion energy have no empathy for their customers other companies provide better service to their customers and are kind. The only solution I was offered was to disconnect the service and pay for the disconnection fee. This feels like an abuse by Champion energy.Champion Energy Services Response

Ana, sorry to hear you are having difficulty paying your electricity bill. When you renewed in 2022, rates were higher. Texas also experienced above average temps all summer long. This was followed by a delivery rate increase from Oncor and other transmission and distribution utilities (TDU). These factors all contribute to higher total cost of power for many customers. Notes on your account indicate our customer care agents did discuss ways to get you on a lower rate plan as well as explain how the Deferred Payment Plan (DPP) works. We can have a customer care team member reach out again to go over your options. Thanks, Champion EnergyReview from Brandy W

Locked in an obscene rate last year at peak, predatory numbers and as Texas burns in triple digits this year, this bill has been vulgar. Absolutely vulgar. I have never paid this for electricity in my life and I never will again (and neither will anymore I know). When I complained, I was presented with scammy, predatory options that were designed to bully poor people into extending contracts just to avoid a $250 early termination fee (which is an usually high fee when compared with other companies) or escape garbage contracts like mine. I'm, fortunately, not in a position to be bullied. I don't know why someone would go with any of those garbage options unless they were just absolutely desperate. Anyway, these "terrific" options all either involved extending a contract with them (which the representative admitted, in writing, was not a good plan for us) with a very slightly lower, still-not-at-ALL-competitive rate OR it was strongly suggested we pay an early termination fee and then re-sign with THEM for two years (NEVER!) at an almost-competitive rate. Not sure why anyone would do that. A company scams you into a bad rate and suggests you pay $250 to break a contract and then sign with the scammers again for years?! No. ETF means I have a golden ticket to tell this place to shove it, so that's what I would do. We have about 6 months left with and since we don't use a lot of electricity in winter months and pay mostly gas instead, it's easier to just expose this company for the predators they are and absolutely never have anything to do with them again. We'll also be documenting usage from here on out, because if I catch them in a lie or an overestimate in retaliation, we'll be reporting to the PUC.Review from Miles M

I was enrolled in the Solar buy back program and found that champion charged me the full price for my electricity overs but in the buyback program the price they paid me for the energy I produced fluctuated from between 5:00 and 9 cents a kilowatt hour. my electricity bills shot up. I was producing electricity and putting it into the grid and they were getting my energy and then paying me a pittance for it. when I call to complain the people I spoke with were very unkind and when I canceled they slapped me with a $350 cancellation fee. when I complained they were even more unkind. stay away from this company! the only thing they champion in is ripping off their customers. I'm spreading the word about this company.Champion Energy Services Response

Miles, thanks for sharing your honest feedback. We've always tried to be clear that our solar buyback program is not a 1-to-1 buyback. This means what you pay for consumption is different than the credit you receive for the surplus generation that is returned to the grid. Our priority is and always will be to offer competitive rates for purchasing electricity. We do not offer solar plans that include a monthly fee or add a premium to the consumption rate, like other plans in the market that include a fixed rate buyback amount. Our solar buyback program is a pass-through credit. Our solar buyback FAQ explains how to find the ERCOT wholesale price when surplus generation is returned to the grid. ERCOT wholesale prices fluctuate and like electricity rates may have a different rate every 15-minutes. This time of year demand is low and buyback rates are lower. We recently published our solar buyback rate history on our website to show how the average buyback changes month over month. We are happy to hear you found a provider that will better meet your needs and pay you more to produce solar energy above the ERCOT wholesale rates. There are fewer providers in the market offering a 1-to-1 solar buyback. An early termination fee is a common practice and not unique to Champion Energy. When you enroll in service the provider purchases power at market prices. If you cancel before the end of your contract the provider still has the expense associated with purchasing power for you. Early termination fee amounts are disclosed at the time of enrollment and are on the Electricity Facts Label (EFL) sent in your confirmation of service.Review from Shelle W

I came to Champion from *******, and not only did I get a $50 discount my second month, but there have been no surprise charges or hidden fees. Rates have gone up but my bill has not doubled as other companies did. I will be here a while. This company charges me late fees even if my account is current and is on autopay. Customer Service of this company is extremely rude. I will be looking for new service elsewhere.Champion Energy Services Response

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. You were charged a late fee when your auto pay was declined due to NSF (non-sufficient funds). As a one-time goodwill gesture, we will waive the late fee. A supervisor left you a message if you would like to discuss further. Thanks, Champion EnergyReview from KAREN D

I paid Champion Energy early termination fee and requested receipt called the company who handles this for them and nothing. I just wanted my receipt and never deal with the crooks at Champion. Why do I have to deal with a second party to get Champion to do the right thing. Sending complaint to Gov Abbott maybe he can get something doneChampion Energy Services Response

Karen, thank you for bringing this to our attention. We recently responded to your other complaint explaining what occurred. We sincerely apologize for the delay you experienced in receiving a copy of the letter from our collections agency. We've taken corrective actions with the agency to make sure they improve processes and training. The letter was suppose to be system generated and mailed, like the agent indicated. That process failed and it was not discovered until we investigated further. Your letter is being mailed as of 7/28/2022 showing the the debt was settled. Again, we appreciate your patience while we looked into what happened and correct this for you. Please reach out to [email protected] if you do not receive the letter by next week (allowing for USPS delivery time).Review from Diana M.

My electric bill went from $200 to $400 when my contract ran out. The manager at customer service was intimidating. I have not received my $350 deposit back and the new contract offer was $.07 more than my expired contract and I unhappy with my service, to say the least. I currently have no contract and I am shopping around.Champion Energy Services Response

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Please send your service address or account number to [email protected] so we may look into the issue of your deposit refund. Energy rates have steadily increased since October of last year. You are not alone in feeling the pain of historically high prices. We tried to email and call all our customers out of contract and paying higher rates to discuss options to lock-in at a fixed lower rate to avoid high variable rates that change month-to-month based on market prices.Review from Rosaam W.

I called Champion Energy four times last year to early terminate the service. They gave me wrong information. The person on the phone was rude and said you cannot early terminate as you have five year contract. Even if you terminate you will be responsible for whole five years. We will still bill you. I could not understand this and got confused. Recently I did some research with different companies and found out that Cirro energy has no early termination fees and some other companies only charge for three months fees. I was given wrong advice everything time I called them and I feel this was extremely unprofessional on their side. I am not happy with this company for high Billings and unprofessional lying. Thank you for sharing your experience. It is a common practice with many REPs (retail electric providers) and allowed by the PUC (public utility commission) to assess an early termination fee if a customer switches service to a new provider before the end of the contract term. You are under contract with Champion Energy until June 2024. Please reference the response provided in 2021 to your original complaint, which stated: The Customer Protection Division has determined Champion acted consistently with Substantive Rule §25.475 General Retail Electric Provider Requirements and Information Disclosures to Residential and Small Commercial Customers. The company has billed the account in accordance with the established terms of service and the usage reported by the transmission and distribution company.
