A federal grand jury indicted two Californians for their alleged roles in a tech support scam. The two supposedly stole millions as a part of the scam, including from one victim that completely liquidated their retirement accounts worth almost $1.3 million.

Florida man charged with theft

Authorities arrested a Florida man for allegedly stealing thousands from elderly victims as a part of tech support scams. More than a dozen victims, all above the age of 60, received pop-up notifications on their computers that claimed their devices were locked. A phone number was provided to unlock their computers, and the scammer then convinced victims to send thousands in an effort to regain access.

Two people arrested by the FBI in tech support scams

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrested two individuals in an alleged tech support scheme that spanned 7,500 victims and pulled in more than $10 million. Like most tech support scams, the two operated a malicious web site with pop-ups that prompted victims to call for help.
