Example of Business Profiles with and without logos

BBB Research: Do consumers prefer a logo or image on the BBB Business Profile?

Initial research says YES.

Some businesses show their corporate logos or other image files in their BBB.org search listings.  See the graphic above, showing an example of a business with an image file and a business without one.  Do businesses showing image files receive more website traffic to their profile pages?  In other words, are consumers more likely to click on listings that have image files?  We took a look at the data.

We analyzed web traffic for 100,000 randomly selected ABs with A+ ratings, 23,000 of which had image files showing in their search listings on BBB.org and 76,000 of which didn't.  Here are the results:

TypeMedian Views of the Profile
A+ rated ABs with an image or logo in the business profile210
A+ rated ABs with no image or logo in the business profile172

Having an image file in the business profile was associated with 22% higher median inquiries over three years.

What does this mean?  Does it mean that showing an image file in a business listing will be likely to increase its web traffic?  It's very possible.

It's also possible that there are other factors going on. Even though we randomly selected records and ruled out any effects of rating by choosing only A+ rated businesses, businesses that show images or logos in their listings may be different from those that don't in some other way.  Perhaps they are more likely to spread the word to their customers about their BBB business profiles and are more likely to tell their customers to check BBB's website. Or, perhaps businesses that already know that they are receiving lots of traffic on BBB's website are more likely to want to put image files up.

In conclusion, our findings suggest that it's very possible that posting an image file on a BBB.org listing will increase clicks to the business profile by 22% or more.  We will focus future research in this area.
