BBB Serving Central California & Inland Empire Counties: Action line - Porch pirates

(Getty Images)

Q: I’m pretty steamed! I had TWO packages stolen right off my porch in the middle of the day. My doorbell camera captured a pair driving to the front door and plucking the packages right off my doorstep. They didn’t even wear any masks or anything. I’ve naturally reported it to the police, but I’m still angry. I still have a few packages on the way and don’t want to repeat this. Do you have any suggestions as someone who’s gone from the house all day?

A: Sorry to hear that; hopefully, the thieves will be caught. As for protecting your packages, there are a few things you can do that BBB recommends that we’ll get into shortly. Regarding quick fixes, it cannot be easy to safeguard your packages while away. I’m not sure about the layout of your front porch, but one creative solution I’ve seen is constructing a small crate next to the front door for depositing packages. It’s not the most foolproof plan, but it can still hide your package from thieves roaming around. For now, here are some quick tips BBB recommends:

  • Check with neighbors. Sometimes, your package may not be stolen or applied at the wrong address. See if the delivery service may have dropped off your package at a neighbor’s house. Many delivery companies will take pictures of your package in the designated location – be sure to check for the photo and verify it is at the right spot.
  • Don’t leave unattended packages. Ask your neighbors if they mind holding on to packages delivered if you’re away from home during the daytime.
  • Ship to store. If purchasing an item from a retailer with a physical location near your home, consider shipping it there instead. Retailers will require proof of purchase or identification before releasing packages they have received.
  • Use a security camera. Installing a home security system with cameras or a camera-enabled doorbell is a great way to deter package theft, especially when highly visible. The video evidence will help law enforcement track the thieves even if a package is stolen from your porch.
  • Require a signature. Many delivery companies include the option to require a signature before leaving a package, letting you take physical possession of the item as soon as it is delivered. While this option works well for those at home, especially for expensive items, it may create difficulties in receiving packages if your schedule and the delivery service differ.
  • Consider a package receiving service. Some independent businesses also specialize in this service, allowing you to designate a different delivery location for your packages and the ability to pick them up on your way home.

Finally, if you fear that your package has been stolen, file a report with your local police department and the delivery company. Depending on your delivery service, they may offer insurance or other policies to reimburse you for your losses.
