Students from eight North Texas high schools created 1-minute public service announcements about BBB of North Central Texas’s contest theme, “BBB Scam Tracker.”
Burkburnett High School (Burkburnett), Byron Martin Advanced Technology Center (Lubbock), Lake Highlands High School (Dallas), New Tech High School (Coppell), Petrolia High School (Petrolia), Richardson High School (Richardson), Wichita Christian School (Wichita Falls), and Wichita Falls Career Education Center (Wichita Falls) participated in the competition. They all have strong film, journalism, and audio-video production programs. The educators make this contest a success and play an integral part in bringing this competition to life.
“The theme ‘BBB Scam Tracker’ is the way BBB collects reports regarding scams and educates consumers. We offer information about scams to educate consumers allowing them to make information decisions”, said Monica Horton, Better Business Bureau serving Dallas, Lubbock and Wichita Falls.
The videos feature scams targeting the 15-24-year-old demographic. They were judged on production quality, creativity, the teams’ ability to market them, and effectiveness at representing BBB. The contest's first phase took place online on the BBB|NCTX’s YouTube page. The second phase of the contest took place on BBB|NCTX’s Instagram page, where students were encouraged to promote the videos among their friends on social media.
The winning teams' schools collectively received $3,500 in donations to their Audio Visual programs. The students of the winning teams each received a Vlogging set complete with a tripod, light, and microphone, along with cash prizes. The winning video was featured on TexomasHomepage.com and KRFE Radio.
