Better Business Bureau Great West + Pacific is warning consumers about Jacob&Co Trailers. This company has allegedly taken thousands from consumers and is advertising the sale of a trailer they do not own. The company, which claims to be based out of Montana, has been the subject of two Scam Tracker reports received by the BBB. The company is not registered in the state of Montana.
A consumer in southern Oregon reported that in early September 2023, they lost an $18,000 half-down deposit on a horse trailer in Great Falls, MT, from Jacob&Co Trailers. The consumer stated, “I contacted him through Facebook Messenger initially, later email and phone conversations. He offered delivery and all seemed good. He required 1/2 money and would set up delivery. All seemed fine, he remained in contact with me until the day of delivery. The trailer was supposed to be delivered on that morning. About noon I got a call from an unknown number. It was “Premier Pet Transportation” or so they claimed, trying to deliver my trailer but I needed to pay them and additional $5,000 for cargo insurance. I knew at that point it was a scam.”
Another Scam Tracker report detailed Jacob&Co Trailers attempting to sell a horse trailer owned by an individual living in Idaho and not affiliated with the company. As of October 25, 2023, the horse trailer in question is currently advertised on the Facebook page for Jacob&Co Trailers, having been posted on September 12, 2023. The trailer is advertised for sale at $40,000, but the owner states it is worth $70,000. The trailer is being advertised as located in Great Falls, MT when it is located in Idaho. The consumer called the phone number on the Facebook post to question the company. A company representative ended the phone call.
A BBB investigation found that the company is not registered as a business in Montana. Also, the company, its website, and its Facebook page possess many questionable elements that consumers should consider. On the website for Jacob&Co Trailers there is no physical address, information about the company is vague and contains typos, and the social media icons do not link to any specific social media pages.
The Facebook page that was reported to the BBB is titled “Horse & Stock Trailers For Sale,” but includes Jacob&Co Trailers in the intro. The page has also undergone multiple name changes since May 2022, when it was originally titled “Utility Dumper Trailers.” The page also states, “Primary country/region location for people who manage this Page includes: Cameroon”.
The BBB attempted to contact Jacob&Co Trailers but has received no response as of October 25, 2023. Fraudulent business activity causes emotional and financial harm to consumers, working against the BBB’s Standards for Trust.
The BBB recommends:
- Always meet the seller and see the item for sale before purchasing. Never buy an item like a car, trailer, or boat without making an in-person inspection and testing the item. This will help you avoid most scams on Facebook Marketplace. You should also ask to see the registration/title for the item if required in that state.
- Watch out for too-good-to-be-true deals. They are most likely a scam. Scammers often steal consumers’ personal information and money by offering them high-value goods at extremely discounted prices.
- Never wire funds or complete bank-to-bank transactions. Scammers love this kind of transaction because there is no way for you to get your money back once it is completed. Instead, make legitimate purchases by check or credit card.
- Don’t give in to pressure. Scammers often pressure you to give up your personal information or make a down payment before you have time to consider the purchase. Take your time and think a deal over before agreeing to anything. If you get a bad feeling, listen to your gut.
We encourage anyone who has spoken with or lost money to Jacob&Co Trailers to report their experience at BBB.org/ScamTracker and local authorities.
