BBB Central Indiana: 2023 Torch Award recipients

By BBB Serving Central Indiana. November 2, 2023.

(BBB)

The Better Business Bureau® in Central Indiana named the 2023 Torch Awards for Ethics recipients. The BBB Torch Awards for Ethics embodies BBB’s mission of advancing business trust and honors organizations whose leaders focus on the four C’s: the Character of the organization’s leadership, if and how an authentic Culture is being fostered; the company’s transparent relationship with its Customers; and the impact the organization is making in the local Community.

“Each year BBB Central Indiana has the honor of highlighting the tremendous efforts put forth by our local businesses and organizations,” explains Cathy Armour, BBB Central Indiana President and CEO. “It’s with great appreciation that we recognize these leaders’ commitment to bettering our community through marketplace trust.”

An independent panel of judges were particularly impressed by the following BBB Accredited Businesses:

Big Mamma’s House Books®
Character of Leadership

Dr. LaWanda Jobe founded Big Mamma’s House Books, in honor of her late grandmother, who helped raise her. It’s an urban children’s book company that intentionally champions the importance of literacy and reading comprehension. Dr. Jobe strives to live and lead with a high moral character by empowering her team to ensure every aspect of their projects includes ethical practices, which also align with how the business operates. Not only is preventing plagiarism taken very seriously, but their team also ensures each project entails an appropriate amount of research on each subject matter before producing stories.

Dr. Jobe’s leadership provided the foundation for her business and team to thrive. She hopes to further its growth by keeping empowerment, creativity, trust, communication, and integrity at the forefront of every project.

Rehab Medical, LLC
Culture Built on Trust

Rehad Medical is a medical equipment provider specializing in complex rehab technology for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and spinal cord injury. While the company is committed to improving and positively impacting patients' lives, it also extends the same intentions to its partners and employees.

As the company continued to grow with employees brought on from around the country, it was necessary to solidify the company’s culture. They established the company’s core values - energetic to achieve, hard work with balance, and compassion- to illustrate how the team should operate together.

Once a part of the team, new employees can take part in programs that foster leadership exploration and help them acclimate to the company’s culture. To further strengthen it, Rehab Medical demonstrates a culture of trust by both establishing and fulfilling expectations set with its employees.

Peterman Brothers Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical
Commitment to Customers

There is a level of service Peterman Brothers Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical strives to provide all their customers. Their approach begins with how they first treat their team. Peterman Brothers believes if they take good care of their employees, their employees will, in turn, take good care of their customers.

When training their team, Peterman Brothers take a two-pronged approach. There is not only preparation on the technical side but also training on how to build trust and value with customers. The latter is a critical component of the business. They stand by the belief that without the customer’s trust, they are unable to put technical skills to use.

Understanding and enhancing the customers’ experience has been a priority for Peterman Brothers. While they hope to create lifelong customers, if nothing else, the business wants to put a smile on people’s faces and provide quality service so customers can properly take care of their homes.

Turning Pointe Academy
Impact in the Community

Alisha Kuckartz founded Turning Pointe Academy (TPA) by chasing a dream to develop holistic learners through teaching performing arts with a unique approach. The performing arts have been an important part of her life since childhood when she first started as a competitive baton twirler at six years old.

On top of encouraging students to participate in the community, Turning Pointe Academy leads by example. The academy offers assistance to local families with school supplies, contributes to Riley Children’s Hospital through an annual bake sale, volunteers at summer camps and nursing homes, and provides entertainment in support of a local parks program.

The academy instills integrity in its students by providing them with a variety of ways to give back to the community. By exposing young people to those opportunities, they can feel inspired, connected to the community, and be more likely to want to continue doing good when they become adults.
