Shred Day 2024 Recap (BBB of Greater Maryland)

BBB® of Greater Maryland’s Shred Day Serves 1,400 Marylanders

In 2023, the Federal Trade Commission received 18,327 reports of identity theft from Maryland residents, and they estimate that as many as 1 billion identities are stolen nationwide each year. Protecting your identity and shredding the risk of identity theft is essential. Shred Day is part of BBB’s national effort to combat and reduce the spread of personal identifying information. The event offers free, secure document destruction in two prominent locations, White Marsh and Timonium. Attendees don’t even have to get out of their cars to shred!

“My family and I look forward to attending the annual Shred Day every year. I always watch the news to see when it’s coming”, says Sheila, Baltimore native.

BBB Greater Maryland Foundation hosts Shred Day as its primary fundraiser. Although shredding was free, donations were greatly appreciated. This year, we raised a record-breaking $4400 in support of consumer education, scam prevention awareness and more.

Iron Mountain, BBB’s Shred Day partner of over 17 years, supplied mobile shred trucks and a team of professional technicians, to shred on-site. BBB’s team of volunteers consisted of Accredited Businesses, board members, local BCPS students and more. We worked together to collect bags and boxes full of documents to be shredded. In the end, 100 percent of the shredded paper is recycled.

Shred Day attendees received identity theft prevention tips and sponsor giveaways. Sponsors included: Maryland Heating & Air, Columbia Floors, LLC, Nu Look Home Design, Inc., Tar Heel Construction Group, LLC, Thunder Bay Roofing, CARCHEX, McCormick & Company, Inc., Four Rivers Contracting, Integral Consulting, Strategic Factory, Von Paris Moving & Storage and Iron Mountain.
