Buying a car, whether new or used, can be daunting. To help create a smoother process, here are ten tips to consider from Better Business Bureau (BBB) to help consumers make informed choices:
- Set a budget - Assess how much you can afford, including taxes, insurance, and other costs.
- Research models - Compare car models to suit your lifestyle and prioritize safety and fuel efficiency.
- Consider financing - Get pre-approved for loans to have options beyond dealer financing.
- Evaluate ewn vs. lease - Weigh the benefits of leasing versus buying outright based on your budget.
- Compare prices - Use online tools to check dealer pricing and current incentives.
- Locate trustworthy dealerships - Check reviews on BBB.org to avoid pushy sales tactics.
- Inspect warranty options - Ensure you understand the warranty terms and any added service contracts.
- Negotiate separately - Discuss financing, trade-ins, and add-ons independently for clarity.
- Check rebates - Confirm eligibility for any available manufacturer rebates or bonuses.
- Final inspection - Before finalizing, thoroughly inspect the car’s exterior, interior, and features. When buying used, be sure to check the car history through Carfax or similar, and have a trusted mechanic check it out.
