Behind the Business with PinkDog Spa Inc. of Boxborough, Massachusetts
Carina Ramos and Nancy Wyrebski founded PinkDog Spa Inc. in late 2016. At the time, they set up their pet grooming business with used equipment procured on Craigslist and rented a 750-square-foot space in West Acton, MA. Today, PinkDog Spa is a thriving multi-location operation, offering grooming, a pet hotel, and pet daycare.
"PinkDog Spa has experienced significant growth and transformation since its humble beginnings," shared Carina Ramos. The founders attribute their success to how their pet grooming method. PinkDog Spa offers a daycare-style grooming experience that avoids crating dogs unless absolutely necessary. Instead, dogs are encouraged to play and socialize before their grooming session, creating a more relaxed environment, which often lessens the animal’s stress.
"Every pet is different, and that's something we embrace wholeheartedly," Ramos explained. "We take the time to analyze each pet individually—learning their personality, understanding their needs, and working closely with their owners to ensure we provide the best possible care."
Today, PinkDog Spa operates across four locations: dog grooming and daycare services in Boxborough and Sudbury, MA, a pet resort in Harvard, MA, and its newest location in South Florida. Each site maintains the company's core values of high-quality pet care and exceptional customer service.
Ramos reflected on opening a location in another state and said, “Expanding into South Florida in 2022 was a major step for us, and I worked closely with Nancy to make sure we maintained our high standards while successfully adapting to a new market. We are always looking for ways to innovate and improve, whether it’s expanding our pet hotel and daycare services, introducing new wellness treatments, or refining our stress-free grooming techniques.”
When asked what she enjoys best about her business, Ramos shared, "There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a once-nervous dog grow to trust us, wagging their tail when they walk through our doors. Our goal isn't just to provide a service—it's to make sure every pet leaves feeling happy, and every owner feels confident knowing their furry family member is in good hands."
Beyond their daily work, PinkDog Spa is committed to supporting the local pet community. They collaborate with police departments, animal control, and pet rescue organizations to help care for animals in need.
"Whether it's grooming rescued dogs to help them find their forever homes or providing temporary care for animals in transition, we do our part to ensure every pet gets the love and attention they deserve."
As a Latin women-led business, Ramos takes pride in her and Wyrebski’s journey to building a trusted, growing brand and shares the expertise she provides their team. “With over 23 years of experience working with animals and a background in biological sciences, I bring both scientific knowledge and business acumen to our operations. My research experience has given me a strong analytical mindset, which helps in making informed decisions that prioritize both the well-being of the pets and the success of the business. My years of experience with animals give me a unique perspective, allowing me to combine science, business strategy, and creativity to provide the best possible care for our client’s pets.
Additionally, Ramos shared that Wyrebski brings vast experience to their team with over two decades of experience. She was a veterinarian in Brazil before moving to the U.S. to continue her passion for working with dogs. Wyrebski guides their team in understanding pet care and behavior and helps refine the company’s pet safety, hygiene and wellness protocols, enabling PinkDog to provide top-tier service to its clients.
