ZERO STARS. CA Closets failed to install our closet as contractually promised. We had a signed contract on 5/31/23 with a completed install date of 8/22/23. Half of the project measurements were incorrect. They also damaged several areas of the walls, floors and ceiling during the partial install. We were then made to wait two additional months for the completed correction. We spent those two months arguing with our designer and two managers to try to get an accelerated date of completion with no success. Most of our communications were ignored. We have asked them at least ten times in writing to remove the partially installed closet with also no success. Now we are in the process of terminating the contract through our credit card. One of the managers has started to respond to our emails with untruthful statements, information and dates. It is unclear if we will lose some money on this cancellation or if we will need to go to small claims. JA *************, **Review from Donald S

California Closets did not incorporate standard "supply and install" business practices into their sales process. They were not they willing to be flexible regarding up front deposit (say 15+/- % rather than 50%) nor a payment process tied to their progress / incurred costs. Their sales process did not provide a quote that broke down the cost into materials and labour. All the foregoing are standard business practices which they would not accommodate so they advised me to go elsewhere which I did and got a suitable contract.Review from Wendy B

I cannot recommend this company. I encourage anyone to secure work with a different company.I had $25k worth of design and installation services for two closet and a laundry room. The closet design and installation framed over 2 electrical outlets without any notification. The laundry room cabinets spilt the hot and cold water outlets between to units and the height was installed 1 inch too high. The floating shelves look horrible and are uneven and cannot be fixed, so can only be taken down. The installation was contracted to be 3 days and they were aggressive on the dates with charges for any change on my part. It took 6 days to complete and I had to chase them via text, email, and calls to have the work completed. Now that the work is completed (with design flaws) they call me twice a day to complete payment. How hypocritical!Review from Andrew S

I used the contact form to get a consultation. *********************** came out on Tuesday Oct 25. She promised the quote by ******. The following week I left 2 message at the company. Still nothing. I posted on Yelp and got a reply from ************ and by her name it says "owner." **** is not the owner, it turns out, but she says she will have Karter call me. No call. I reply to **** and she says a Sales Manager will call me. Anyway, Wednesday the 2nd, I get a docusign contract. I have now spoken to ****** and also *****************************, the Sales Lead for **************** ***** and ****** apologize and tell me this is not how they do business. Karter forgot to leave a card and sent the contract to the wrong email. I tell them I am losing faith in California Closets, but say I will sign a contact if they can make any concession for my bad experience. I actually said "eat some margin to retain a customer." To this, they say they will review my deal. ****** promises to call me at 10am the following day. I wait until 4pm and message her. I get an email from ***** saying that we already got a 5% savings for being a repeat customer but she could add some hooks. That was insulting. I texted and tried to call both ***** and ******. Then I waited 2 hours for a reply. Nothing, so I post my full experience here so that others do not have to deal with this. Then I get on the **** site to check their license #******. Turns out Karter is not listed under that license as personnel or as a salesperson. Go figure. Call Classy Closets and save yourself the hassle.Review from Tamara G

Two Projects Incomplete. We ordered a closet install and a bulit-in media component. We had the latter installed *************************************************** Closet staff telling the vendor to lie when they were trying to get the doors for our second job (2- months passed the due date) The email is from ***** and validated as real by all involved:"Hi ******,Would you advise on the eta of this order? I had it arriving last week. Did I mess something up as our install is tomorrow ?Help please tell me it shipped Lie if you have to Baaaahhhh Send tracking as I am being blown up with emails asking where this order is at.Thank you so much. "We were lied to four times on when our doors would come. Now three months later we have no doors. ***** said she was "joking" except there is an important correlation in terms of the email evidence of ***** telling vendors to lie and how we have been lied to. And then the closet project, which was started 3 weeks ago is also not complete. We have a hole in the top of the closet and I was not told the project was incomplete so I lost expensive towels in a large hole in the top of my closet. Overall, the communication from ****, a mid-level manager and ******, the ** on the West Coast is lacking even a mild level of empathy. The entire operation seems out of control. I was told by **** that my deposit for the closet would be refunded (I have that in writing and I did not ask for that) and then was told there was no way I would get a refund for the deposit. They just refunded to final charge as they did not realize the job had not been done. So my life has been disrupted for months with these two incomplete jobs and literally no one at CA Closets seems to care. IMO, AVOID these people at all costs. Their interpersonal skills are lacking and IMO they lie.Review from Mike C.

We had USA Bath come out to quote us on redoing our master bath shower. The price was higher in we were expecting as 4 years ago the quoted price was half as now. I can understand costs go up so thats not the issue. My issue is we came to an agreement with the sales rep and when she came out to sign paperwork now our price is going to be more. I have text that confirm nothing was going to change, boom she is here and bait and switch. This is really the way you operate your business?California Closets (Calgary) Response

We are very proud of how we operate our business, and in particular - in this instance. Our Sales Consultant, who has been with our company for less than a month, met with the customer and priced out their project at almost $13,000. The customer did NOT make a purchase or sign a contract. There were then subsequent text messages from the customer asking about changes in scope to bring the price down. The customer then suggested a price of $10,000 and our Consultant said she ought to be able to do that, and set an appointment to go back to the customer's home. Before doing so, she reviewed the numbers again and determined she had gone too low. When she arrived at the customer's home she apologized and explained she made an error, and the lowest price she could agree to was $10,500. She explained exactly why. The customer responded with "Bait and Switch"Our Consultant was nothing but straightforward and honest with the customer. We all sometimes make mistakes, and I am proud of her both for rechecking her numbers, but even more so for being honest with the customer and openly explaining the math and her error. Unfortunately, the customer was unwilling to accept the answer, and has now complained that they should receive the incorrect price. We will not do that. We do written contracts for a reason, and we ask our team members to always double check their contracts and their numbers. Thank you for the opportunity to respond to this complaint.Customer Response

Hello,Thank you for your response. I understand that people make mistakes we all are human. My issue is you rep had agreed to a price in writing. All proposals should be double checked before shooting from the hip and agreeing. Also, when they realized that there was an error the better thing to do would have been to call or text. Honestly we probably would have been ok with the change. But when you we have checkbooks out ready to sign and boom the price changes it leaves a very bad taste. It made us feel like we were going to be nickel and dimed since the price changed at the last minute. My ask is that you honor your price that you rep had agreed to. Again thank you for your response and I look forward to hearing back.California Closets (Calgary) Response

Thank you for understanding. We are indeed all human and imperfect. Unfortunately we are not in a position to price your project at your desired amount, as previously explained. We are not going to lock in an erroneous price that was quoted in error and subsequently corrected prior to be written and signed in a contract. Thank you.Review from Thomas S

Sixteen years ago we built a home and contracted with California Closets to design three of our closets. We have been looking at "remodeling" one of them to make it more friendly for our child who is now a teenager. After we made a phone call, a very kind ********************* made an appointment and came out to our home on a Saturday morning. He had several ideas and we liked one of them. Surprisingly, he was able to actually remove and move bars and shelving around, giving us an almost entirely new-looking closet! He did it right then and there, and didn't charge a dime. We were so pleased with his knowledge, kindness and the work he did. Exceptional service.
