My car needed the wheel ***** cut open to fit bigger tires in the back. Also my driver side door did not close properly. He told me would cost $3000.00. The job looked good at the time , but the car has been in a mechanic shop and the paint is coming off. The paint comes off from painters tape where the wheel ***** are. I payed more than quoted and door was not repaired. Would like $1000.00 refund to repair the paint.

      Business response

Sorry for the late response, this is the first letter I received. ***** is mentioning a door repair which was never anything we worked on or was asked to do. As for the paint peeling, when ***** brought this car to me (June *****, 2020) it was to cut the opening of the rear wheel well open to make it larger to accommodate a larger tire that he had brought mounted on a rim without it looking like we had actually done so. He left us the new tires he was going to use on the car so we knew exactly how much to cut the opening out. In the end, we were only able to cut away 2" to keep the car still looking original which is what he wanted. This allowed the new tire to fit in the wheel opening with an inch or more of clearance. During this time, he had stopped in a few times to look at the progress of the job and was happy. We finished up all the welding and bodywork and repainted and blended the area where we refabricated to fit the new, larger tire. He did not express any issues when picking up his car. He liked how the alteration turned out as it was not noticeable to the average person. The new wider wheels and tires were on the car when he left.

On October 29, 2023, (2 years and 4 months later) after he has been driving the car, he called me to let know he had an issue with paint peeling. I didn't ask him to bring me the car like most shops would do but rather, I go to his house on my own time out of curiosity to see what is happening. On November 2, I went to his house. The first thing I noticed when I arrived is that he has installed an even larger tire which is too big and is rubbing on the inner wheel opening where we had done work. These new tires have damaged both sides of the car now. When I mentioned the tires were too big and pointed out the damage, he got upset and said he was more concerned with paint "peeling" on the inside of the wheel lip. I looked carefully at the paint in this area and the paint is not peeling off. In my opinion, it had been rubbed off from forcing too large a tire into the wheel well. I asked him how long those tires had been on the car and he told me they were put on 1 month ago by a tire shop. I asked him if it was possible that the tire shop rubbed the paint off when installing too large of tire and he replied "I don't know, I'll have to phone them". He also mentions the paint comes off from painters tape. I am not sure why he was putting tape on the car in the first place, especially in an area with existing chips. There was never any mentioned of this until this letter.

I find it odd that he had no issues with this car for over 2 years until he installs these new tires. I am not sure of anyone that will warranty work after even 1 year. I told him I would message him on Monday with a price and a date of when he could bring it in. I explained to him that the best solution is to put the smaller size tire back on the car (the size for which the wheel well was cut out for) and then I could repair the area but not as a warranty job as this damage was not my fault. Even after mentioning there would be a charge, he seemed rather interested in having me repair the tire damage along with additional paint chips. On November 6, I messaged him with a date and a quote and he never replied. I messaged him again on November 15 to follow up which is when he randomly expressed his disappointment and that was the last I heard from him.

There will be no refund considered here. I will attach some photos as well.

      Thank you,

      Complaint: ********

I am rejecting this response because:
I have had another body shop look at the paint coming off inside wheel well . They advised me its because of poor preparation before it was painted! Now I have to have the entire job re done!! Looks like no solution here. Never will have anything good to say about Old Time Garage!!!
      Sincerely,
