October 1, 2023 Sand Pebbles Inn Qualicum Beach. I booked a room for a one-night stay at the Inn. Arrived at the premises at checking time 4 pm on October 1-2023. I went to go to the office and the sliding glass door as the entrance was locked had to ring bell. Got keys and gave credit card information. Went to the room to relax. Started reading the in-room guide. Which stated no pets in the inner courtyard. My wife is disabled and has a service dog. The guide mentioned visiting dogs, where to take them outside and the location to clean up after them etc. The front door of the office had a dog dish with water. 30 mins after we checked in there was a knock at the door. The woman from the office came and said there were reports of a dog in the room. My wife was holding the dog. The woman from the office stated there are no dogs allowed. So, my wife explained that it was her service animal and showed her license for the dog. She said I’m sorry we don’t accept pets. So, she said I’ll go back to the manager and explain. She came back in 10 minutes and said no, the manager says you must leave. So, I said we’ll come and talk to her. She said OK. When we got to the office the rules also stated no smoking on premises. The office was saturated with cigarette smoke. Also, two dogs were being walked through the premises via in the inner courtyard…. Against the rules in the guidebook for the inn., in the room. Seems the whole place is a contradiction of rules not adhered to by management. We tried to reason with the manager that as disabled person it is against the law to discriminate. She said we had to leave anyway. So, we asked for the room charges to be dropped and were assured we were not being charged. Only to find out they did go ahead and charge for the room. This is criminal and clearly blatant discrimination. For more information Call: Darryl Olsen Jorgia Olsen

As a hotel we are not legally obligated to accommodate an ESA A service dog and an emotional support animal (ESA) serve different purposes and have different rights and responsibilities. A service dog is specifically trained to perform tasks that assist individuals with disabilities. These tasks can include guiding individuals with visual impairments, alerting individuals with hearing impairments, or providing support for individuals with mobility issues. Service dogs are protected under the Americas with Disabilities Act (ADA) registry canada and are allowed to accompany their handlers in public places, including restaurants, stores, and transportation. On the other hand, an emotional support animal (ESA) provides comfort, companionship, and emotional support to individuals with mental health conditions. ESAs do not require specific training, but they are prescribed by a licensed mental health professional. ESAs are protected under the Fair Housing Act (FHA) and the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). This means that ESAs are allowed to accompany their owners on flights and live in housing that has a "no pets" policy eg. Condo, apartment, house not hotel, motels or inns that has a "no pets" policy. It's important to note that while service dogs have public access rights, ESAs do not have the same level of access. ESAs are generally not allowed in public places where pets are not permitted, such as restaurants or stores. In summary, a service dog is trained to perform specific tasks to assist individuals with disabilities and has public access rights, while an ESA provides emotional support to individuals with mental health conditions and has housing and travel rights. However, checking in and not disclosing the animal also poses health risks to others, eg. A staff member or guest with asthma and animal allergies could have been hospitalized had we discovered the pet .As we advertise a pet free atmosphere .
