Following the Storm Fiona I noticed we had a leak in our garage. On Mon 26 Sep 22, I contacted A-Plus Roofing and spoke with Bernie, the owner. I advised him of the issue and he stated he will be by later in the day to take a look. Within a couple of hours Bernie came by and advised me it was the Ridgeway that covers the peak causing the problem and that shingles were missing. I found this strange that he could tell that without going up on the roof or checking from the inside of the garage. In addition, I did not find any shingles around my property or in the adjoining wooded area. Due to this, I askeD Bernie to come inside the garage so I could show him wher the leak was coming in to the garage. Although he clearly did not feel it necessary, he accompanied me and I showed him. He bluntly told me once again, it was the Ridgeway. I asked how much he would charge and he stated $850. I agreed due to my need to limit damage to the ceilings in the garage. The next time it rained on Wed 28 Sep 22 I noticed the leak was back in the exact same place it had been prior to the repair. My wife immediately contacted the company and spoke with a female who answered the phone to let her know and to have Bernie attend to properly fix the issue. My wife also sent photos of the leak and damage at this time. My wife was advised Bernie was hunting and would be back the next week. The following week my spouse contacted Bernie who stated the leak was new and his company did what they stated they would, and that was to replace Ridgeway. I overheard my wife arguing with Bernie. Bernie stated the next time it rains, he will come out and look. Over the next few weeks it rained several times but Bernie did not ever attend my house. A different Roofer attended and stated A-Plus applied caulking to area that ridge meets upper gable and butt capping to gable over existing capping. Capping should have been cut and wrapped into gable to ensure proper water run off.

      Business response

I ( A-Plus Roofing Limited)  received a call from Mr. ****** on the day of the storm (Fiona) it was windy and raining. I went out to James ******'s home and he informed me his garage was leaking. I didn't need to get up on his roof as I had a pair of binoculars and seen that his ridge vent was completely gone.  Mr ****** couldn't find no shingles around his property because (Fiona) storm , high winds blew them away. I only charged $ 850.00 plus HST for two men, ridge vent and shingles. The roofers went out in that storm to secure his roof. They could only repair shingles and ridge vent that were missing due to the high winds and rain . Mr ****** had a secondary leak in his home which I advised him when he called after the repairs were carried out. I sent two roofers out to take a look to make sure our ridge vent wasn't leaking and it was fine, no leaking. There are siding walls and roof line intersections on the garage roof which we would never find a leak in a storm like that. We went to replace the blown off shingles due to storm.  The roofers left and Mr. ******'s wife called and said "the workers didn't advise they were leaving" and I advised her they didn't have to because they report back to me. Mrs. ****** was not a very pleasant lady to deal with. I advised her she has a secondary leak and it is not my problem . However, I told her next time it rains I would go in the attic to see where the water was coming in from to pin point it out, but before I got there they had their friend fix the leak, which had nothing to do with the repair job that we carried out.  According to the video Mr. ****** sent me this leak was not my problem. It appears to me according to the video he sent it was a caulking that broke down when his roof was done.

I refuse to refund Mr. ******. I sent roofers out there risking their lives in a storm to secure his roof and to be so ungrateful , while so many more were literally in tears when we showed up to do repairs in the storm. The price I quoted and billed him for was a fair and reasonable price for labour and material. This was a storm , we had many people waiting for our service who appreciated it very much.

      Customer response

      10/11/2022

I am rejecting this response because:

The entire point of having roofers out to my house was to fix the leak in my garage.

The portion of the response where the owner claims he advised me of a secondary leak only occurred after we made contact with his Receptionist to inform her the leak was still occurring. When I finally spoke with the owner he stated “there must be a second leak” He made these statements after the repair was made and we noticed it was still leaking.

The owner claims he was going to come over to my house to check for himself: however, he didn’t because I already had it fixed. This statement is not factual. The work was completed on 26 Sep 22. We informed the company on Fri 2 Oct 22 that the leak is still present. It was not until 23 Oct 22 we had a new Roofer attend our residence and fix the roof. Please see previous attached email date to A-Plus as a reference. That is almost 1 full month of various weather and waiting in limbo.

The business owner notes that his personnel were dealing with extreme weather during the instalment; however, he didn’t feel it important enough to attend my residence to verify the quality of work as he mentioned in his response. The fact that it was extreme weather as the owner noted, clearly shows that the installation was challenging enough for him to be concerned. However, not concerned enough to follow up and supervise accordingly.

Finally, it was a very unfortunate time for all of us. The owner mentions how emotional other clients were the day of the repair and that I am ungrateful. I am not sure of the relevance of this portion. It is apparent the owner was making an immediate generalization that affected his business decisions. It also appears to he did not feel my leaky roof wasn’t serious enough in his judgement. Finally, from the owners statement it is apparent the owner made a judged my character when we first met and perhaps this effected his attitude from the start.
