A few weeks ago, I visited Gyro Hyundai ** ******* for my seasonal tire swap. I asked them to check out an intermittent squeak in one of the rear wheels, and the mechanic called a while later and said I needed my rear brake pads & rotors replaced, both rear calipers replaced, brake fluid replaced, front brakes serviced, and wheel locks installed -- $1829.62 before tax. I declined, and said I'd be taking the car for a second look by another mechanic. They then ******* **** *** tried to tell me my car was not roadworthy -- that the brake calipers had seized and that I should not drive the car. (Seriously, did I drive in with smoke pouring from screeching wheels? No, I did not.) Luckily, this ain't my first rodeo as a car owner, so I again refused. Then the rep called back saying he'd talked to his manager (of course he had), who wanted him to warn me against driving the car and said the work was "very urgent" and that they might be forced to keep the vehicle until the work was completed. I very firmly told him NO, this was not happening, and insisted on my right to ask for a second opinion. I took the car to an independent mechanic *********** ** * ***** ******* and as I suspected, there is not a gosh-darn thing wrong with the vehicle.
