In May 2021 we hired this company to install a small section of hardwood floor, refinish the existing main level hardwood throughout, veneer two small staircases and replace the handrails at the main entrance. Their workmanship was not satisfactory and they left a very large dark area in the main living room floor. We asked them to stop working on the stairs, try to fix the dark patch and complete the clear coating throughout. During the price renegotiation for the balance of work Mr. W. got upset and stormed out before we could agree on an amount. We are willing to give him back the spindles and custom posts he brought (one of which was too short for the job) as well as a can of urethane he left behind.

      Business response

Consumer Response /* (3000, 13, 2021/11/28) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) The original quote from Mr. W. was $4000.00 and he charged us an additional $400.00 for two staircase posts and two pieces of handrail that were custom design. We provided him with a $2000.00 cash deposit as well as the additional money for the staircase customizations. After the blunder of staining the living room Mr. W. was very upset, and I was willing to let him try to fix it but I was nervous and disappointed because he was not confident in his own ability to fix it. The next day I reached out to 4 other contractors to see what could be done. All four of them said the job in general was very low quality and that too much wood had been sanded off the floor to fix it properly, so much so that the floor will probably fail in a very short time frame. Two contactors were unwilling to take on the job, one said he could try to fix the dark patch for $750.00, but he also said Wood Floor Polishing Inc. should complete the work to our satisfaction. I then had two staircase companies provide quotes for the front entrance, both said one of the posts Mr. W. provided was too short for the railing to be installed according to building code. We decided to have someone else complete the post and railing installation as we were no longer confident Wood Floor Polishing Inc. knew the building code or could do the job in a manner which would be safe and secure. We asked Mr. W. to come back and attempt to fix the dark spot and finish just the hardwood. Mr. W. and his assistant James did return, and James caulked the small staircase near the bedroom. I pointed out that the top bullnose looked terrible, like they just put stain over the original flooring without sanding it down, they got into a bit of an argument with each other but that was dealt with. James then started sanding the bedrooms while Mr. W. and I discussed the pricing of the balance. Through our discussion, he learned that I had other contactors in and that one said he would charge $750.00 to try and fix the dark spot. Mr. W. kept demanding I tell him what I was going to pay, and I said he provided the original quote as a whole, not broken down into costs so I couldn't say what the cost without the staircase completion should warrant. He kept muttering about the $750.00, and trying to do the math and it was if he was going to charge me an additional $750.00 to fix the dark patch. When I said "I'm not paying you to fix your mistake" he didn't say anything, just turned and went down the hall to where James was working. I did not mean I wasn't willing to pay him anything to complete the job, I just wasn't willing to pay him an additional $750.00 to fix what he had done incorrectly. He said a few things to James and they started to pack up, I thought he'd come back and speak to me but he didn't, they got in the van and started to leave. I went outside and asked if that was it, were they leaving us in the lurch? Mr. W. got out of his van, we had a verbal exchange, I called him a shyster and told him I would not be giving him favorable reviews etc. He told me to pay someone else the $750.00 as it wasn't worth his time and health and they left. At this point Wood Floor Polishing had sanded down the hardwood throughout, installed 4' x 6' new hardwood patch, installed stair treads and most of the stair veneer, stained, and had done one coat of varathane on the bedrooms and hall. We paid another contractor $2600.00, their work included sanding down and staining the custom railings that Wood Floor Polishing Inc. had allowed to be rained on while staining the first time. Adding the remaining veneer on the steps and making the staircase look complete. Sanding down the bullnose for the front staircase, attempting to get the dark patch out of the living room floor. Applying the first coat of varathane in the living room, sanding the first coat of varathane in the bedrooms, hallway and living room and then applying the second coat of varathane throughout all locations. I also paid $1764.45 for the front staircase post and handrail installation, including new posts that are the proper length and solid spindles as opposed to the hollow ones Wood Floor Polishing Inc. provided. The fact we paid $4368.45 to have the work completed by alternate contractors shows that much more than 10% of the job was remaining when Wood Floor Polishing Inc. abandoned the job. As I previously mentioned I'd be happy to return the unused materials which consists of two staircase posts, spindles and one unopened pail of urethane in exchange for a refund. The damage to our stairs, flooring and inconvenience to our household far outweighs the costs of materials and labor incurred by Wood Floor Polishing Inc. when they vacated the job.
