In 2018, as part of a major $80,000+ home reno, we entered into a contract with CBC as a primary constructor to build, install custom cabinetry that came with a 10-Year Warranty to ensure our protection, that the quality of their work was and is enduring. The cost of this contract exceeded $23,000 (~30%) of our total project budget.
It's not uncommon minor adjustments are required following an installation of cabinets, but generally once these small corrections are made-the cabinets require little to no attention thereafter.
Initially, CBC was attentive to our needs, but increasingly we've had concern regarding hinges and hardware slipping out of place affecting the 'soft-close' of drawers, cupboard doors, and the retraction of pull-outs. CBC installers were consistently asked the cause, and weren't always forthcoming, except to say, 'you've too much weight in the drawers.' One installer showed me the rating on the hardware is 24 kg.
To verify, we removed the contents of every drawer and cabinet that was posing problems and discovered the weight in every drawer and cabinet was well within the threshold of the hardware rating. The average weight was 52% of the 24 Kg rating. Range (17% - 70.0%), --well within the functional rating of the hardware.
We've contacted other reputable cabinet makers in Regina, and all of them use ONLY hardware manufactured in North American, or European, not Asian, as is the case here.
Continuing into 2021/22, we raised additional concerns related to: failing sliders, pull-outs that fall off their runners, failing soft closes and hinges falling out. In 2021, a significant issue arose with the recycling/garbage bins. These were selected as part of our kitchen plan, because it was displayed in CBC's showroom.
*** ********* the co-owner's solution was a 'plywood box' inserted unsecured in inside the cavity where the defective bins had been removed.
*********'s solution is evidentiary, he neither cares about his customer, his reputation as a company, not the warranty that is part of the contract we signed, which expires in 2028.
Angered by ***'s solution, we then told Mr. *********, these ongoing issues, and piecemeal panaceas are unacceptable and unsustainable. We've requested a permanent solution that is in-line with what is expected custom cabinet is expected to be. Mr. ********* has failed to address our concerns, or calls.
Lastly, in November 2022 the hinge of a upper pantry cabinet door failed, causing the door to hang precariously above our hardwood floor. We called CBC regarding this issue-they've ignored and failed to return our calls and today, the pantry cupboard door sits open, with the contents visible to all who enter our kitchen.
Since 2018, we've referred our cabinetry concerns to CBC, because we have a warranty that states that, 'our warranty is void if we seek outside contractors to repair their product(s).' We are proud of our home, and our improvements, but CBC is giving us a 'black-eye' because they've failed to stand behind their work.
We request from CBC they:
1) Honour their warranty and their consistent failure to address our concerns in a timely matter.
2) Permanently repair of our on-going faulty hardware problems, as it pertains to our cabinetry.
