BBB's Popular Speaking Topics Include:

Scams Targeting Older Adults

No matter your age, no one is immune to scams. But older adults report higher median losses. Why is that? Scammers often target older adults through phone fraud, impersonation tactics, emergency scams, sweepstakes and lottery scams and more. Learn about the most common scams that target this demographic and how to protect yourself and loved ones from becoming a victim.

Avoiding Scams and Fraud

BBB will discuss the latest scams and fraud, including the riskiest scams, that are targeting Western PA consumers at home, during work and on the internet. Learn how to recognize the warning signs of a potential scam and how to report scams to BBB through BBB Scam Tracker.

Protecting Your Identity

Identity theft is the fastest growing white-collar crime in the United States and one incident of ID fraud occurs every three seconds! Learn about the red flags of identity theft and type of information identity thieves are after, different examples of identity theft scams and what to do if you or someone you know becomes a victim of an identity thief.

Scams and Your Small Business

Scam activity directed at small businesses is growing and these scams pose a significant risk, generally resulting in a higher monetary loss per incident than those targeting individuals. In this presentation, BBB will highlight some of the top riskiest business scams and how you can protect your business and employees from becoming a victim. Examples of such scams include business email compromise (BEC) scams, phishing and tech support scams, fake invoice/supplier bills, directory listing and advertising scams and more.

BBB Savvy Teen

Young adults have been identified as more susceptible to falling for a scam than any other age group. This demographic is also the least likely to detect identity theft in a timely manner. During this program geared toward teens and young adults, BBB will discuss internet safety tips, online purchase fraud, how to identify an employment or financial aid scam and share the latest scams targeting people on their smartphones and social media.

Fighting Financial Fraud

This BBB program was developed in partnership with FINRA Investor Education Foundation to empower consumers to spot the signs of a financial scam, recognize scammer behaviors and know where to go to verify legitimate investment professionals. Even if you have never been subjected to an investment fraudster’s sales pitch, you probably know someone who has. The truth is we’re all at risk. But you can help protect your family and friends by recognizing how fraudsters operate and by reporting suspicious sales pitches and scams. Check out BBB Smart Investing for more information on this subject.

Giving Wisely to Charities

During this educational session, BBB will discuss BBB Wise Giving Alliance and its Standards for Charity Accountability, as well as tips on how to choose a trustworthy charity and avoid losing your hard-earned money to a fraudulent charity or scam.

Hiring a Home Improvement Contractor

During this helpful session for homeowners, BBB will provide important tips for hiring a home improvement contractor and understanding home improvement contracts. Learn about your rights and responsibilities as a homeowner in Pennsylvania and how to avoid falling for a home improvement scheme.

BBB Military Line - Military Consumers and Marketplace Trust

Life in the military comes with unique stressors that affect how consumers and families interact in the marketplace. Service members, veterans and military spouses must be able to discern between a trustworthy business and a scammer or imposter in disguise, especially during times of change or instability. During this presentation, BBB Military Line’s free resources will be discussed, along with the riskiest scams reported by military consumers and how to identify them.

Schedule a presentation by a BBB representative

Presentations usually last 30 minutes and may be followed with a question and answer session. Requests for longer presentations and luncheon keynote remarks are also welcome. There is no charge for this service.
