Judging Criteria

Evaluation of the video entries and awarding of the awards will be accomplished by a panel of judges from businesses, colleges/universities, and non-profit organizations that are members of the BBB of Akron Board of Trustees. Additional judging will be conducted by the BBB of Akron staff.

After Submission: BBB will review all submissions to identify qualifying entries. Qualifying entries will consist of a video created by an eligible student that follows Rules & Guidelines, and is submitted with a completed online entry form, as well as a signed copy of the Terms & Conditions, and Media Release Forms included in this document. Entries missing any of the components listed above will not move onto judging.

Pre-Judging Review: BBB will review all qualifying entries and assign a score on a 1 – 5 grading scale based upon how well format guidelines were followed. The score will be based upon whether the video meets the requested running time, whether the requested title screen is present, the completeness of the information requested, and whether the video was submitted in the appropriate physical or digital format. Videos that fail to follow guidelines will receive lower scores than videos that follow guidelines, and a score of 1 – 5 will be added to the entrants’ total score.

Judging: After the pre-judging review, BBB will submit all qualifying entries to our judges. Each judge offers a unique perspective on elements such as videography, graphic design, writing, presentation, photography and marketing.

Films will be judged based on narrative strength, compelling characters, and filmmaking skills. Judges review each film using the four components listed below.  Judges will rate each component on a 1 – 10 grading scale. The combined sum of each component will comprise the total score, ranging from a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 50.

The total score from each judge’s score cards will be added together to provide a preliminary score. BBB|Akron will combine the preliminary score with the results of the pre-judging review to determine the total score of each video.

The total score will be used to rank entries and identify the first, second and third place winners. Any entries with tied scores in the top five will be submitted to judges to be scored again in comparison to each other as a tiebreaker.

Judging will be based on:

  • Completion of all appropriate online entry forms.

  • Submitting your complete video entry and online form by the deadline date and time.

  • Articulation and thoughtfulness in your opinion on the importance of a business to conduct itself ethically in your video.

  • Creativity and uniqueness of your entry.
