10 Things to Consider When Purchasing New Windows
By David Grusenmeyer, Affordable Glass and Mirror, Inc.
Purchasing new windows can be a daunting task, especially if you don’t know what to expect or look for. Whether they’re new windows or you’re replacing some old ones, there’s plenty of planning and research necessary beforehand. As with any contractor entering your home, there’s a safety issue. Inviting a stranger into your house can be unsettling and brings about the need for thorough investigation before you settle on a contractor. Here are ten things to consider when purchasing windows:
- Pricing - Consider the prices for each and every window contractor you’re considering. Be wary of suspiciously low prices or very high prices, as well as the amount of time the contractor says it will take. Compare all the quotes before making a decision.
- Customer Satisfaction – Ask around and find previous customers of local contractors to hear what they have to say. Also, look at online reviews about contractors.
- Recommendations – Talk to friends and family members to see if they have any recommendations or experiences, bad or good.
- Time Frame – Purchasing new windows can be a lengthy process including, measuring, picking out a design, construction, replacement and payment. These kind of renovations can take days, even weeks, so it’s important to understand the time frame you’ll be working in.
- Get Things in Writing - It’s recommended any agreement involving renovation or payments should be in writing. This documents the expectations of both the consumer and contractor.
- Be Wary of Door-to-Door Offers – A common scam involves contractors going door to door offering their services to homeowners. Occasionally the homeowners say yes and are prompted to pay up front. They do and the workers are never heard from again.
- U-Factor – Other than letting light in, window’s secondary job is to trap heat when it’s cold out. The U-Factor rates the window’s resistance to wind and heat flow. The lower the number, the better insulation your window will provide.
- Quality of Product – Make sure the product you’re buying is a quality window and know what you’re getting. Ask about things like air leakage, energy performance rating and condensation resistance. Also, get warranties and guarantees in writing.
- Know Who You’re Buying From – Are you interested in a franchise or a do you want to support a local business? Both franchises and small, local businesses offer different things. For instance, larges franchises may be able to offer lower prices, but local businesses can sometimes offer better, more direct service.
- Check Licensing/Registration, Bonding and Insurance – Make sure the contractor you settle on is covered as appropriate. Understand what you’re liable for and what the company is. Coverage can change from company to company so it’s important to know where you stand.
