Utah Student Video Contest Theme

We occasionally get asked: what is Better Business Bureau? Even when someone is familiar with our name, people are surprised to learn just how much we do!

So, we want you to create an innovative video in 60 seconds or less about an aspect of what BBB does.

BBB provides core services that make us who we are. We:

  • Review advertisements for false or unethical claims
  • Investigate bad businesses
  • Track scams
  • Resolve disputes between businesses and customers
  • Alert the media to scams and bad businesses
  • Evaluate and review charities
  • Inform businesses and consumers through marketplace education
  • Provide BBB Business Profiles
  • Accredit trustworthy businesses

That’s a lot of stuff. To make it easier, you can just pick one aspect that inspires you, learn about it, and create your video. To see these bullet points in greater detail, keep reading!

Review Advertisements

BBB  helps identify cases of misleading, deceptive, or untruthful advertisements appearing in the media throughout. We monitor a wide range of advertisements (print, television, radio, and Internet) based on the BBB Code of Advertising.

Investigate Bad Businesses

BBB actively identifies problematic marketplace practices that may mislead or deceive consumers. Our investigations team works to inform the public by taking a closer look at these companies.

Report & Track Scams

You can report scams to BBB Scam Tracker, and see what scams are in your area. A real person at BBB reads and reviews each report that comes in. We sometimes share these with local law enforcement and the media to help educate the public.

Resolve Disputes

BBB works with businesses and consumers as a neutral third party to resolve marketplace issues, like complaints. In some cases, we even offer mediation and arbitration services if an agreement can't be reached. BBB resolves more than two-thirds of complaints that come through our office.

Evaluate & Review Charities

BBB Wise Giving Alliance reports on U.S. charities. Becoming an Accredited Charity is free, but there are 20+ standards a charity must meet in order to gain BBB Accredited Charity status. Before donating, you can check a charity on Give.org. BBB currently reports on over 11,000 charities.

Marketplace Education

BBB does our best to educate all kinds of people (like through this contest!). Check out our Speaker's Bureau for business + consumer groups, and our Military & Veterans Initiative that aims to help service members, veterans, and their families protect their assets, plan for the future, and prosper in a trustworthy marketplace.

Provide BBB Profiles

Business Profiles are the largest core service BBB provides. For more than 100 years, BBB has been helping people find businesses, brands, and charities they can trust. In 2020, people turned to BBB more that 220 million times for Business Profiles, all available for free at BBB.org.

Accredit Trustworthy Businesses

BBB Accreditation gives consumers confidence that they’re dealing with an ethical and vetted business. Today, BBB Mountain West is supported by more than 4,000 Accredited Businesses that have voluntarily committed to adhere to BBB’s Standards for Trust.

Verify Reviews

We've all heard of fake reviews to make a company look better or worse than it really is. BBB upholds steps for validating customer reviews to minimize misuse, like checking email address or phone number, not allowing anonymous reviews, and allowing businesses to confirm the reviewer was a customer.
