What is the difference between cleaning and disinfecting?
It is important to understand the difference between cleaning and disinfecting. “Cleaning” refers to the removal of dirt and impurities from surfaces, which does include some germs. However, cleaning alone does not kill nor eliminate germs. Disinfecting, on the other hand, does kill germs on surfaces. Disinfectants use processes like foggers and other chemicals that will eliminate germs. It’s important to note that disinfecting will not necessarily make surfaces look cleaner. If you choose to hire disinfecting services, you should also hire an accompanying cleaning service to ensure your business is safe.
What comes first?
It’s important to clean and remove any visible dirt before disinfecting. This helps prepare surfaces to be thoroughly disinfected. If the surface is not cleaned first, germs can hide under soils and reduce the quality of the disinfectant.
How does disinfecting work?
Disinfectants are chemical agents that seek to destroy bacteria, viruses, fungi, mold, and mildew. All disinfectants must be registered with the Environmental Protection Agency, so always ask the company you hire to see their certification.
Disinfecting agents come in many forms, including sprays, wipes, and foggers. They’re made up of different compounds such as ammonium, chlorine, alcohols, hydrogen peroxide, and more. When hiring a disinfecting and cleaning company, you should always ask the following questions:
- What is the kill time -how long will it take for the germs to be eliminated from surfaces?
- Is the product being used safe for humans and animals?
- How flammable is the product being used?
- Will the products damage any surfaces?
- How soon can occupants return to the disinfected area?

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
