Finding a new hair salon can be stressful – since hair grows back slowly, a “bad” haircut can feel like a disaster.
While it may be tempting to just look up the closest salon or the salon with a discount, you want to be careful before settling into the stylist’s chair.
Do your research. Ask friends and neighbors (or anyone whose hair you like) for recommendations. Read reviews.
Visit the salon’s website to see what services they offer and what their specialties are. If you have curly hair, you don’t want to go to a salon where all the pictures are of people with straight hair. If you want highlights, make sure they have photos of people with the kind of color you want done. You can also use the salon’s site to check prices before you book an appointment.
In addition to the website, check the salon’s social media to see pictures of their work and to see what people are saying about them.
Once you’ve chosen a salon you feel good about and that falls within your price range, prepare for your visit to the hair salon. Preparation and communication will be the keys to getting the haircut you want.
Before you go under the scissors, ask for a consultation with the stylist. Ask for the stylist’s thoughts and recommendations. If you have a specific style in mind, make sure you come with a good description or photos of what you want. A consultation is also a good time to check out the salon. Make sure it’s clean and see what types of clients go there. If the clients seem to have the types of haircuts you like, it could be the place for you.
Some salons charge different amounts based on the length of your hair. Some salons charge extra to blow dry your hair. Some stylists will suggest extra services without clearly identifying extra costs. So make sure you are clear on all costs and prices before the stylist starts to work.
Once you’ve chosen a salon, it may make sense to ease into any major changes. Before you chop off six inches of hair or go from brunette to platinum blond, start small with simple services. Maybe just get a blow out. Or a trim. Or just cover your gray hair. Once you are satisfied with a stylist’s work on you, you can move onto more comprehensive services.
