Typical handyman services
A handyman or handywoman is hired to complete household tasks. Many people hire a local handyman to save time or because they do not possess the technical skills or physical ability. Typical handyman services include:
- Plumbing
- Heavy lifting (such as moving furniture or appliances)
- Painting
- Hanging trim molding
- Yard work and maintenance
- Installations (such as mounting a television or hanging window treatment)
- Grouting
- Drywall and other carpentry
- Installing decks and patios
- Laying or removing floors
- Cleaning and hanging gutters
- Kitchen appliance repair, removal, and installation
A local handyman can do more than make home repair projects go smoothly. They can also be called upon for unexpected plumbing or electrical failures. Many handymen will provide their own equipment and pick up the items needed for your home project.
Warning signs of a handyman scam
Handyman scammers will try to fluster homeowners and use that confusion to their advantage. Here are common warning signs to avoid when selecting a home handyman:
- They refuse to put the offer in writing. Documentation will make it more difficult for the scammer to get away with a poorly done or costly job.
- They demand payment before the job is finished. There is no reason for the scammer to show up or answer your calls once they have been paid.
- They are not insured or have no referrals or portfolios.
- They pressure you to make a decision or sign a contract quickly. Sometimes they will even offer limited-time or on-the-spot "discounts" to pressure you.
- They show up late or don't answer calls. A legitimate home handyman who values you as a client will respect you and your schedule.
8 questions to ask before hiring a handyman
One look and it would seem that handyman services are plentiful. However, a local handyman who shows up on time and provides quality work and offers may be more difficult to find. As you search for a reliable handyman near you, ask these questions during the initial interview:
- How long have you been a handyman? What experience do you have with the project I am hiring you for?
- Are you licensed and insured?
- Will you show me pictures of other projects you have completed? Can you provide a list of customers or reviews of your work?
- What is the best way to contact you? When are your contact hours and how long does it typically take for you to respond?
- Will you pick up supplies and provide your own equipment?
- How did you come up with the estimated cost? Can I see a breakdown of the cost? Do you charge hourly or per project? What kind of payment do you accept?
- Will you apply and pick up the permits?
- Will you clean up after your work?

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
