More information on finding an massage therapist near you
Before you start looking for a massage therapist, decide on your goal for your massage session(s). Are you in pain, looking to reduce stress, improve your work performance, or enhance your general health and well-being? The answer to that question will help you decide who will best provide the service you need.
Also consider: Are you being referred by a licensed medical professional, such as a physical therapist, medical doctor, or chiropractor? Are you trying to manage a medical condition with massage?
Top tips for finding a massage therapist:
In order to get the most out of your massage sessions, it’s very important that you choose a qualified massage therapist – one that understands the proper techniques to keep you safe and improve your overall health, i.e., both body and mind. Consider your personal preferences: will you be comfortable with a male or female therapist?
- Gather names. Getting recommendations from friends and family members can be useful in your search.
- Check the websites of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and the American Massage Therapy Association.
- Check for licensing and certification. Once you have a few names, call or check online whether the therapist is licensed and certified. Most states regulate the industry.
- Check BBB.org to see if the massage therapist is highly rated and/or BBB Accredited.
- Ask your primary care doctor what type of massage therapist they recommend and find out if the therapist will consult with your doctor about your treatment.
- Check with your insurance company; many health insurance plans cover massage therapy for certain conditions. Talk to your insurance provider about their rules for reimbursement.
Schedule a consultation
Before you go, don’t be shy about asking for a consultation, either in-person or on the phone.
- Tell them about your goals.
- Does his or her personality fit yours?
- Ask about their experience and training.
- Answer honestly any questions they have of you.
Something to remember.
Don’t be shy; speak up! Let the therapist know what you want (intense pressure, or a lighter touch). Consider your first session a trial run. If you’re unhappy, you don’t have to continue. You can change therapist at any time. The more comfortable you are, the better the outcome.

Accreditation and Ratings Overview
Select businesses earn BBB Accreditation by undergoing a thorough evaluation and upholding the BBB Accreditation Standards.
BBB assigns ratings from A+ (highest) to F (lowest). In some cases, BBB will not rate the business (indicated by an NR, or "No Rating") for reasons that include insufficient information about a business or ongoing review/update of the business's file.
