More information on pet sitters
Pet sitters come to your home to care for your dog or cat in its own environment. This is a good choice for pets that are nervous or get stressed easily by changes in routine. Some sitters drop by your home throughout the day and take your dog for a walk. Others may stay at your home for the duration of your trip, even staying the night.
What to ask before you book a pet sitter
Before your trip, ask your veterinarian and friends who own pets for pet sitting recommendations. Once you have a few reputable pet care options to choose from, meet potential sitters in person and introduce them to your cat or dog. Pay attention to how they interact.
When you find a pet sitting service that seems perfect for your cat or dog, give them a dry run. Let them care for your pet overnight or for a weekend.
The following questions will help you decide whether or not to book their services:
- How long have you been in business as a professional pet sitter?
- Are you a licensed and insured for pet sitting?
- Do you have references from previous clients can contact?
- What is the cost of your pet sitting and dog walking services?
- How far in advance should I book your services?
- Will you sleep in my house or visit during the day?
- How many times per day will my pet be fed, played with, and exercised?
- Will my pet be around other animals? If so, will their interactions be supervised?
- What are your requirements for vaccinations?
- Are you qualified to handle special needs pets?
- What happens in case of emergency?
- What are your cancellation policies?
Dog and cat sitter red flags

- They can’t provide you with any references.
- They don’t get along well with your pet.
- They aren’t comfortable administering medication to your cat or dog
- They are vague about when they will be at home with your pet.
- They don’t have the licenses and insurance that is required in your area.
