Not many people know but Mercedes-Benz also was found guilty of participating in the same kind of shenanigans as VW by where Mercedes joined forces with Bosch to program its BlueTEC vehicles to release illegally high, dangerous levels of emissions via a defeat device that turned off or limited emissions reductions during real-world driving conditions but not during vehicle emissions tests. As part of the $700 million settlement they were required to replace several parts on the vehicle including the engine CPU, catalytic convertor, NOx sensors, and to offer an extended warranty on several other components of the emissions control system. I took my Sprinter van in for the required modifications and upon picking it up immediately found the check engine light was on. The service technician came out and looked at it and says this happens because they don't allow enough time in the scheduled work for running the vehicle for all of the possible codes to become known, so he reset the check engine light and assured me they codes would go away. The check engine light came back on the next day. I bought it back and they once again reset the check engine light. It came back on in the following few days. I once again called the Sprinter van service manager to have them look at it and he said it would be at least two weeks before they could look at it. I could not wait two weeks because I would be leaving to go out of town for the next two months and this problem did not exist prior to the modifications made to my vehicle. I have a diagnostic code reader and it indicates the problem is a defective AdBlue temperature which is one of the emission system components covered by the extended warranty. Tiring of getting the runaround of Mercedes Benz of Mobile where they just kept resetting the check engine light and giving me new appointments with extended wait times, I decided to take my vehicle the next closest Mercedes Benz which is in Pensacola. I will detail what happened there at the Mercedes Benz of Pensacola site but suffice it to say the experience was even worse. In summary, the Sprinter van is the most unreliable vehicle I have ever owned, Mercedes-Benz has demonstrated themselves to be unethical in its behavior with this fraudulent/malfunctioning emissions system, and even when forced by the US government to rectify the situation, the Mercedes service centers do not honor the mandated warranty fixes.

      Mercedes Benz of Mobile Response

      09/24/2021

Mercedes-Benz of Mobile performed the emissions modification as per MBUSA guide lines for this VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on RO (Repair Order) ****** (May 13th 2021). During the pre-work inspection before the campaign was performed there was a code 203D17 Fill level sensor 'AdBlue' has a short circuit to positive. The limit value for electrical voltage has been exceeded. After the emissions modification the report showed everything to pass. The vehicle was released to the customer. When the vehicle returned for Repair Order ******(May 11th-21st 2021) the customers complaint was "STATES KEY WILL TURN IN IGNITION AND UNIT HAS ELECTRICAL POWER BUT WILL NOT CRANK OVER HAS TO TURN OFF AND BACK ON TO GET STARTED-ADVISE. STATES ONLY HAPPENS ON FIRST START UP OF THE DAY" there was no code stored or current in the CDI(engine) control unit, the SCR(AdBlue) control unit, or EZS(Electronic Ignition Switch). The vehicle was starting properly at this time while at our facility, it was kept for several days to check the starting while cold. There was non-related codes in control units that are unrelated to the engine or emissions control units. No further further Repair Orders have been opened at MB of Mobile or indicated at another dealership in the VMI(MBUSA's Vehicle Master Inquiry) since MB of Mobile RO ******, there is a paperless print out from another dealership, dated Sept 14 2021. MB of Mobile does have record of the customer calling in on 6/16/21 and 9/17/21 to make appointments, but customer elected not to set an appointment due available date and times. MB of Mobile did not have any further complaints from the customer or fault codes that could warrant repairs under the extended warranty at time of writing. At the dealership level, MB of Mobile would like to perform repairs on anything eligible to be Mercedes-Benz manufacturer warranty and would not turn away MB manufacturer warranty eligible work at any time. Covered items under the extended warranty can be found at https://BlueTecUpdate.mbvans.com. Complaints with the vehicle itself should be addressed with MBUSA CAC(customer care) (800) 367-6372 and not a reflection at the dealership level. Information regarding the class action settlement with Mercedes-Benz can be found at www.mbbluetecsettlement.com or calling 877-313-0170.

      Customer Response

      09/29/2021

The reply by MB service is factually incorrect. The check engine light was on when I picked up the vehicle after the emissions modifications and I immediately notified the service manager of this. I connected my diagnostic code reader to the vehicle and it showed numerous error codes of which the Ad Blue temperature sensor was one of them. The service manger had a service technician look at the vehicle and he claimed that MB does not allow enough time in the work order to identify all of the codes that might come up after the emissions modifications but assured me they would go away. The Ad Blue temperature sensor code went away after resetting the check engine light but came back on and stayed on only a few days later. Tiring of the delay tactics of resetting the check engine light and giving service dates at least two weeks out. I made an appointment at another MB dealer who confirmed the AdBlue sensor was defective but would not replace it because the vehicle had been upfitted to be a Class B RV and some RV parts were in the way. Literally tens of thousands of these vehicles have been upfitted to RV's and the few parts that needed to be removed could be accomplished by removing about ten nuts. I ended up having to buy the part which should have been covered under warranty and paying an independent service shop to replace it.
The MB service manager above claims they will do all warranty repairs but this will only come after extensive delays resulting from them resetting the error codes and then giving service appointments at least two weeks out. Who can wait weeks and weeks to have their vehicle repaired? My suggestion is to avoid these extremely unreliable vehicles such that servicing is not required.
