I was interested in renting a townhouse on Embecca Landing from Barber Properties. I was told I could not see the townhouse because the current renter was still in the home. If I was interested in renting the home I had to put down a $600 deposit. I expressed my concerns about not knowing if I wanted to rent the home without seeing it first. I was never told the money was not refundable. The day after the renter moved out, I went to look at the home. There was painting that needed to be done, broken blinds to replace, and caulking in the bathrooms. I emailed the office staff and gave them a list of what needed to be done. I was contacted a few days later and told that they would paint one wall and 1/2 of another wall. The former tenant had lived in the townhouse since it was built. Plenty of painting was needed. I could not believe that this company was willing to lose a renter over this. I told them based upon their unwillingness to do the minor things I requested, I no longer wanted to rent from them. The company has not returned my $600. Another renter moved in immediately, so Barber Properties cannot claim that they lost any money. I have texted and emailed the company numerous times. I was told in one email that I could use the $600 as a deposit on another one of their properties. I don't want to rent anything from this company. I do not trust them at all. Filing this complaint is my last resort before I take Barber Properties to civil court. I do not want to do that but will if they continue to keep my $600. I inquired about a rental owned by a different, but local, property management company. They ask that a deposit is put down on a rental, but once the client sees the property, and if they are not satisfied, the money is returned to the customer. I told them about my experience with Barber Properties and they were amazed. Barber Properties is engaging in unscrupulous business practice. I will settle for no less than the return of all my money.Initial Complaint

I called in to inquire about storage options available to me. I was given all info and storage rental was set up. I was never given any address or storage unit nor a receipt for the purchase. I was instructed to go to the store to complete application and provide identification and sign lease. I never was able to reach anyone at the ********* location nor was I given any alternative option. I called in and finally spoke with a human after leaving countless voicemails and asked to have my money refunded due to the lack of service provided and that the company didnt se m to conduct business well. The employees told me that their policies does not include refunds and that I could take it up with the owners I called them several more times and left messages as well. Finally I was contacted to say they had reverse the present charge and moved me out of the unit. Which I never signed a contract for. The company makes its own rules. They will tell you that refunds are nonexistent however my second months charges were reversed because they already knew they were wrong for trying force me into the terms of a contract that *** never signed. The management team told me specifically that the owner will never contact me or will anyone else regarding the matter. They have completed negated all customer service options and left me without any resolution.
