I placed a rifle on consignment at Sprague's about a month ago. At the time I was specifically informed that the consignment fee was $40. At no time was I informed of any commission or percentage other than the flat fee. Since their sale price was far less than I had originally paid for the rifle I would not have placed it on consignment if I had been aware of a percentage. The first indication that there would be problems was today when I went to take the rifle off consignment and I was informed that it had been sold over two weeks ago. I was never called. Later that day Sprague's called and asked me to pick up the proceeds from the sale. They gave me a check which was far less than I had been told I would get at the time of consignment. When I questioned this I was told that the 'fee' was not $40 but a 20% percentage that totalled four times what I was originally told. Again: I was NOT informed of any 'percentage' or 'commission' at the time of consignment. I was misinformed, mistreated and blatantly taken advantage of by Sprague's in this transaction. They are aware of my complaint but seemed totally unconcerned. After ten years of regular business, including knowingly paying a markup instead of going online like so many others in order to support a local business and to earn goodwill I feel I have been frankly 'shafted' by this whole event. At this time I have decided to do my shopping online or at least anywhere else.
