I adopted a puppy a few months ago and I was instantly skeptical of her treatment/care upon meeting her. She had to be dragged out of her kennel to meet me. She was caked in layers of dirt and dried/wet urine and trembled with fear. When I brought her home, I bathed her right away (the smell was terrible) and she balled up on the bathroom floor, paralyzed with fear, for nearly 12 hours without moving. I've had her for three months now and she's still so traumatized, I can barely pet her. If I even put a leash in my hand, she pees herself, runs into a corner and trembles. I have not been able to leash train her at all. I'm not sure what kind of treatment she received at this shelter, but dogs don't innately grow up with a paralyzing fear of leashes or anything that looks like a rope. (That is unless they're conditioned to fear them.) Something happened to her at that rescue and it breaks my heart that this terrified puppy has to learn to trust humans again. The people at Petco mentioned that the owner has "a ranch" where she keeps the rescues, but people are not allowed to visit that facility. Not having a brick and mortar listed, and partnering with a place like Petco really allows for gaping loopholes for any legal oversight on their holding facilities. I'm committed to caring for this dog and would never in a million years take her back there. A week after I brought her home, she vomited worms. Petco should really rethink their partnership with this org. Adopters should be able to see the facilities in which their dogs are kept and cared for prior to adoption. This transparency not only builds trust, but shows they're reputable and are taking care of dogs the way they should be cared for prior to finding their forever homes. At the very least, "the ranch" and their kennels should be pictured on the website. I have no physical proof of my dog's mistreatment at the rescue, but if you met her, you'd see it in her behavior instantly. But I will continue to love her.

We are very sorry that you had this experience. All potential adopters are told that because the dogs are cared for and housed in private property, they may be shy at first. If they are, this resolves itself in a matter of days. Dogs (especially puppies) are not leashed trained nor potty trained. We leave that to the new pet parents, as each home is different. Unfortunately dogs do get worms and all dogs are dewormed as many times as needed. The rescue is on private property and isn’t open to the public due to liability reasons. The property is open to inspection to officials and has passed inspection by the County of Fresno. The rescue owner has rescued and cared for dogs for 30 years and would NEVER hurt one of the rescues. She keeps dogs that are I’ll or due to temperamental issues, cannot be adopted. Her love for these animals is incredible. Again we are sorry that you have had this experience. We would have appreciated you contacting us to allow us to help you with the things you mentioned.
