I rented a **** ***** tractor from them, they delivered it , we used it for three days, the fourth day it wouldn't run without black smoke billowing out the exhaust. My operator wrote a note to me and left it on the machine. I arrived to use it for the fifth day and I had the same problem as my operator had. I called apex to let them know there was a problem and they said they could send someone out to look at it. I had my tractor there and told them that I would finish the job with my tractor which we had been using at that job. I lost two days work because of the way their tractor was running. They charged me over 1600 dollars for the rental and claimed the problem was water and rust in the fuel. I used the same tanks to fuel both machines and don't have a problem with my tractor. The tanks I used to fill the machines are plastic. So, I asked if when they drained the tank( they charged me for 25 gallons of diesel fuel also ) did they also service it.? He said yes. I asked would that include servicing the air filter? He said yes. The only reason a diesel will blow out black smoke is if it's getting too much fuel and not enough air( dirty air filter) The rust they claim was in there must had already been there, and the water they claim was in there couldn't have been there. I'm sure as with most diesels theirs has a water separator on it. Rust and water in the fuel huh? I call bologna, but their 28 year old customer service manager told me " too bad " I wouldn't rent from them again due to the fact they are lying about what made that tractor run like a piece of crap. Any water or rust must have been there already. A clogged air filter would be the reason for black smoke to billow out of the exhaust. Too bad for me , I'm out over 1600 dollars for a machine I could only use three days. I welcome a call or email from them again. Then I can tell them how I only used plastic cans to fuel it up. I used plastic cans for fuel from 76 station. Any water was there

Mr. ********, I am sorry you are upset about your experience. I do however disagree with your opinion. Before we charged your card we attempted to contact you by phone 4 times to discuss this ahead of time. It is worth mentioning that the only time you attempted contact with us is after your credit card was charged. First is the amount of time you had the machine. On day 4 of your machine rental you called to extend the time for 1 more day and did not mention any running issues at at that time. You had the machine for a total of 5 days before you called us to tell us the machine was running poorly, not 3 days as you have indicated. Second is that we supplied contaminated fuel causing the issue. This is simply not possible because you ran the machine for 28 hours before having the problem. This machine being used by a professional operator consumes approx. 2.5 to 3 gallons per hour ran. With 28 hours used on the machine, on the low end it consumed 70 gallons of fuel and the machine has a 25 gallon tank. The simple fact is that if we supplied contaminated fuel the issue would come up much sooner. Water and contaminants sink to the bottom of the tank so it could not simply be there before you received the machine. This machine does have a fuel filter and water separator on it like you mentioned, but as you probably know a filter and water separator can only handle so much. This debris and water got into the injection pump and caused permanent damage to it. This is what ultimately caused the poor running and smoking condition. Third, you claim the issue was resolved by “blowing out the filter.” This is simply not true. If this was the case a person of your caliber would have simply diagnosed that in the field. Furthermore we change all filters at approximately 100 hour intervals and check the water separator and blow out the air filter before every rental. We also find it offensive you ask the age of our personnel to try to justify your opinions. Alonzo has worked his way up in our company starting in the wash bay. He has been with our company for over 5 years. Not only does he have in house training, but he has also been to multiple trainings with Kubota tractor. He is qualified to explain the issues. Lastly, Apex Rentals was more than fair with the charges. We only charged you for the fuel that was contaminated, not the injection pump that was damaged or the down time that machine has while waiting for parts. We do not appreciate the false reviews in an attempt to hurt our company. We treat all of our customers fairly, and appreciate when they are fair with us.

      Customer Response

In reference to apex rentals response: When I talked to your manager( Alonzo ) he said that the fuel was drained and replaced, tractor was serviced and out on a rental again. If the injection pump was affected I’m sure he would have mentioned it. For that matter, now I know y’all make stories up. Straight lying. Shame on you. First you say it doesn’t have a water separator, then you say it does and can only hold so much water. Which is it? I used plastic containers ( new ) to transport fuel from the 76 station to the job. Your ( Alonzo) saying the machine had rust and water in it and that was the problem. (Now you’ve changed it to the injection pump was ruined.) If there was water and rust in the fuel it would have to be from the people you pay to maintain your equipment not doing as they should. It would be impossible for rust and water to have gotten there by me because I used plastic containers ( new diesel fuel containers) and the water separator would have picked up the water if it’s been maintained as it should be. Maybe it was the fuel itself? Highly unlikely due to there hasn’t been any complaints to the 76 station concerning their fuel ( I went there and asked if there had been any complaints in regards to their fuel, they said no) Your right , I did call on the last day, when I got to the machine and read the note my operator left me. I tried to run the machine but felt it would be better to call y’all. You were going to pick it up at 3pm so why have a service person come out when it’s scheduled for pick up in five hours? Makes no sense . I’m not going to run the machine while waiting. I parked it and ran my tractor to finish the job. Don’t say I ( we) ruins something we didn’t. That bit about the pump is a lie and we both know that. Alonzo surely would have mentioned that. Instead he said the fuel was drained and replaced, machine serviced, and was out in the field being rented again. I resent that lie your trying to put out there. Bottom line is I rented a machine from you that couldn’t fulfill the rental agreement due to poor maintenance procedures most likely and your trying to put it on me. I did nothing that could have put rust or water into the fuel system. I doubt the tank had ever been emptied ( if indeed you really emptied it . Even though you charged me for 25 gals. of diesel fuel )before I rented it. The machine has systems in place to keep water and rust out of the injectors and you and I both know that. I didn’t ruin anything so quit with the injector pump accusation, that’s a straight out lie. Black smoke from a diesel is caused by not enough air. Most likely due to a dirty air filter. I would have checked it but I remember y’all said people renting them shouldn’t have to do anything to them except run them unless it’s an extended period of rental as in months.. You got my money, you accuse me of damaging your machine ( funny how it’s just now being said now that my complaint about your business is public ) which is a lie. You don’t want to see the obvious. To me it’s the maintainable or lack of that was the cause of the smoke billowing out the exhaust. It’s not unusual for a diesel powered machine to have rust and/ or water in the fuel, hence the filters in place to catch it before getting to the pump. Have a good day sir. Be careful of who your lying about, it could come back to haunt you. Maybe check on your guys that are supposed to maintainence your machines and see if they’re trained by the proper people. You can’t skimp on maintaining these machines. I doubt proper service techniques are in place at that yard. The machine shouldn’t have had any problems. The environment was very dusty, I used plastic containers for the fuel, and the station where the fuel came from hasn’t had any complaints about their fuel. So unless I misunderstood what you’ve written as a response, your welcome for the 1600 plus dollars y’all billed me for. Your machine wouldn’t run for forty hours due to poor maintainence procedures most likely, not due to your customers actions. We do know a little bit about these machines, that’s why it was parked and no one tried running it when the problem started…….
