On June 1, 2023, BBB requested Junk King of Orange County to modify, substantiate, or discontinue claims made on their website (https://www.junk-king.com/locations/orangecounty) which read, “The #1 Rated Junk Removal Service”, “We provide superior value, service and effort”, “North America's Greenest Junk Removal Service”, “We Guarantee to offer you an estimate in writing, to beat any written estimate, and the best service in our industry ”, and “Junk King is known for recycling, repurposing and donating up to 60% of its haul.” Advertisers must be prepared to substantiate such claims per BBB's Code of Advertising.

BBB's Code of Advertising Section 1 states, The primary responsibility for truthful and non-deceptive advertising rests with the advertiser. Advertisers should be prepared to substantiate any objective claims or offers made before publication or broadcast. Upon request, they should present such substantiation promptly to the advertising medium or BBB. BBB's Code of Advertising Section 21 states, 21.1 The composition and layout of advertisements should be such as to minimize the possibility of misunderstanding by the reader. BBB's Code of Advertising Section 22 states, Asterisks can be used to provide additional information about the product or service. However, they should not be used to contradict or change the meaning of the original claim. BBB's Code of Advertising Section 28 states, Superlative statements in advertisements about the tangible qualities and performance values of a product or service are objective claims for which the advertiser must possess substantiation as they can be based upon accepted standards or tests. As statements of fact, such claims, like “#1 in new car sales in the city,” can be proved or disproved. BBB's Code of Advertising Section 29 states, Expressions of opinion or intangible qualities of a product or service do not need to be substantiated. Such claims include “we try harder” or “best food in the world.” Additionally, BBB's Code of Advertising Section 36 states, 36.1.1. Advertisers should not make broad, unqualified general environmental benefit claims like “green” or “eco-friendly.”

On July 17, 2023 the business reached out to BBB by email stating they would like to participate and asked for clarification of what documents BBB is requesting, to substantiate the ad claims. On July 19, 2023 BBB replied by email with the requested clarification. On August 25, 2023 the business responded by email to the ad concerns. On September 6, 2023 BBB replied by email asking for further substantiation.

As of September 6, 2023 the business has not responded to BBB's request.
