Minnesota Attorney General's Office vs Direct Account Management
The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.

On February 10, 2023, Direct Account Management entered into an Assurance of Discontinuance with the Minnesota Attorney General's Office. The Assurance settles allegations that the business marketed, sold, and provided goods or services related to the repayment of student loans, offered to provide advice, or offered to act or acted as an intermediary between consumers and the U.S. Department of Education or its federal student loan servicers in order to reduce or eliminate student loan debt, without first becoming registered with Minnesota’s Department of Commerce, performed and imposed charges or received payment for debt settlement services without first executing written debt settlement services agreements without first performing all of the services it agreed to perform, misrepresented its services or created the likelihood of consumer confusion or misunderstanding regarding its services. The business is ordered to pay $20,063.12 in administrative penalties and shall pay a civil penalty of $10,000.00. The Assurance was for settlement purposes only and should not be considered as an admission of guilt or finding of violation of the law.

    This action is final.

back in may 2021 i recieved an email about a loan forgiveness program. i inquired and spoke to a man named ***** from direct account management. he said even though my loan was a little under $10,000( he knew how much my loan was already) they could still help me and said he got it from ***** something to between 2-3,000. i was to pay $175 for 6 months- (reliant account management was involved) then recertify to pay off my school loan.... this was a loan forgiveness program. i have screenshots on my phone of each text explaining the amount and dates they were to come out and also some saying they need info for the loan forgiveness program. So after my 6th payment nothing more happened. untill i recieved a letter from mohela who is now servicing my loan which is still at *****... that was requested to be consolidated. i never requested this and they said it had my name and signature, also on myfedloan.com an account was set up with my info but not by me. there are no record of any of my 6 payments going toward my loan, so what did i pay for? i called american education services who only told me my loan was paid in full and i owed nothing. i call federal loan servicing whom told me about the consolidation request and account set up by someone else. then mohela who told me they are a loan servicing as well and my loan is at $0 payments till oct 2023 because of the program i am currently on. i tried calling ***** and phone number went to different message, not him. called another of his numbers and it went to voicemail of ******** then 2 weeks later he sends me a message from same number telling me i recertify this oct and they will be reaching out then. and a woman named ***** called leaving a voicemail telling me the same thing.... so why would they say this oct when its not till oct 2023? i am to believe i was scammed and they are ready to keep scamming me since they contacted after 2 weeks of me reaching out. i am upset and very mad someone can do this.

As soon as Direct Loan Management took over my student loan I wasn't able to reach anyone. I called and emailed my loan advisor ***** with concerns I had regarding misinformation I was told. She did not return my calls or emails, but reached out a year later to recertify my PSLF. I returned her call and she told me that they DID NOT submit my PSLF recertification when I initially enrolled a year ago. I'd been making payments toward my loan forgiveness for about 5 years before they started managing my loan and now that has all gone down teh drain and I have to start from square one. In order to recertify my PSLF this year, I was told that they charge a $249 fee. I asked what the fee was for and was told "this is what we do for a living." I just recertified for PSLF myself (something I'd already done at least 5 times) and it took less than 30 minutes to complete on the studentaid.gov website. I'm hoping that once my loans are transferred to Mohela I'll be done with Direct Account Management completely.

Hi ********, we apologize there seems to be so much confusion, we have never received this type of feedback before. We had attempted to call and email you several times before renewal date, but did not get a response. You would never start from "square one" so we don't follow that issue - We did try patiently explaining your program will continue as planned but it seems you lost patience and ended the call. If you wish to revisit we are happy to assist you and clear up any confusion. Thank you!
