I received a citation for using the toll road on June 18th, more than one month after my rent ended on May 12. While the toll fee are no more than $10, I was charged with $75 administrative fee. This fee was not communicated to me when I checked in. I specifically asked "if there is anything that I should know before I sign" when I checked in, but I got the reply "no". In addition, this administrative fee provision is very likely an unconscionable provision because it was buried in the five-page agreement, wich small font and no notification, and the agreement was sent to me after I signed. There was a huge problem when I was trying to obtain my car--the staff was not familiar with the process and was trying to add fee for the *** that I rented. They refused to give me the *** that I ordered online until I showed them the confirmation email with exactly the photo of a *** in front of them. Perhaps this is the reason why they forgot to tell me about the toll road. This was not my first time renting a car, but it is the first time that I am requested for the administrative fee. I am willing to pay the toll fee itself, but I refuse to pay the $75 administrative fee, which is a result of an unconscionable clause. I have contacted Midway's citation and concierge email, no one has replied to me.

I booked a mid-size car through Expedia from 7/7 to 7/10/2023. I waited for 40 minutes and finally reached the front with everything ready. The clerk gave me a quote $30 higher than my contract price and asked for my ID and credit cards. I provide all and more to him. He then started asking for unreasonably more documents. I gave him my work ID with picture, another credit card, and a BOA debit card, he still demands a document including a current utility bill with my current address. I searched on all documents saved on my phone and showed him my 2023 tax return, mortgage interest statement, and all other documents submitted to my 2022 IRS tax return. But he refused to take any simply because they all show our PO Box as address (we do not give out our address lightly due to safety and security reasons as advised by all financial advisors). This clerk has no clue this is a sensible practice. After showing him all these documents, he still refused to honor my legal car rental contract. I asked him to show me the credit report on his screen, it clearly shows our current address in ****** that we bought a year ago and another residence in ****************** we used as an investment property with a 780 800 credit score on his screen. In the meantime, the waiting line was getting longer simply because he held up the transaction. I finally called my wife at home, and she scrambled to find a paper bill from DWP, plus an online statement. After all this, he still refused to continue the transaction because I said I will complain to the headquarters. I had to leave empty-handed after two hours there and hours of travel to this place. I wasted a whole afternoon and missed an appointment and its all due to an incompetent and unprofessional front clerk. Midway has severe structural, organizational, and personnel deficiencies so this will never happen to other innocent consumers. NO STAR.

    Midway Car Rental Response

    07/13/2023

As a courtesy, we email everyone a day in advance Rental Requirements which includes that we will need to verify your residence.

Verifying current address is a common practice in the car rental industry for local residence.  As we state it in our ************************************************** as well as another car rental agency such as AVIS.

On July 6, 2023 ************ came in and presented his driver license.  We utilize a service that searches over 100 billion public records for risk management to verify and authenticate.  From the search the address on his driver license was outdated since 2021.  At that time,we asked for a current resident address and a  copy of utility bill to proof his residency which he did not have.

On his email to me dated July 11, 2023 at 10:24AM he reached out to his wife and at first she only locate an year old paper bill from DWP and finally located online statement.  By this time 40 minutes did pass and our employee patiently waited with him at the counter for documents to arrive.  While ************ was waiting on his wife to provide the necessary document; according to our employees his demeaner got irritated towards our staff.  We decided to walk him out away from the counter, and we immediately try to resolve this issue and called him however he did not return our call.

In reply to his statement/review/complaint above.  He booked a mid-size car for July 6th not the 7th.  We do not run credit report therefore we do not know his credit score.  We do not need individuals personal income tax or mortgage statement.  Our requirement is simple for our local ******************* residence is to show proof of their current residency.

As we pride ourselves with passion for excellence, and a purpose of mobility, we promise to deliver a VIP customer experience.  All we ask is to have our customers meet our requirements to rent vehicles from us and follow our policy and agree to our terms and conditions.
