I would like to file a complaint regarding the practices of the lab of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP). On 9/17/2021, I went to their lab at the Crossroads in Carmel for routine blood work as part of my annual physical. I had done this two years in a row prior to this appointment, and my insurer (Aetna) had fully covered the cost. This time, I was enrolled in both Medicare as my primary insurer and Aetna as my secondary. When I presented my Medicare (Parts A and B) card, I was advised that the test for Vitamin D, 25 Hydroxy would not likely be covered by Medicare and that I had to sign a form stating that I would be responsible for that cost. I told them that Aetna was still my insurer and that whatever Medicare did not cover, would be covered by my secondary. I was told, I still needed to sign a form saying I would be responsible for the cost, should Medicare not cover it. So I signed their form, which I have now learned is called "Advanced Benefit Notice." I was not given a copy of the form. Following the lab work, I received an explanation of benefits from Aetna, showing I owed $0.00. I was therefore surprised to get an invoice from CHOMP indicating I owed $308.00, noting that of the $831.00 charged for the blood work, "only $523.00" had been covered by insurance payments and adjustments. I called CHOMP and was informed that because my two insurances had not covered the full amount, I owed the $308.00. I told them that the previous two years I had had the exact same blood work and they had accepted the insurance payment. They implied that it was because I had signed the Advanced Benefit Notice (ABN). I was not given a copy of the ABN,. In any event, it makes no sense that because I am now a Medicare patient, the hospital's lab should be charging me MORE than when I did not have Medicare.
