I feel the need to share my experience at Rosa's Italian Restaurant in Pismo Beach on the evening of 12/30/23. My critique focuses not on the cuisine or atmosphere but on the dismally poor customer service—the worst I've encountered. Our group of 12, including 3 children, hailed from Toronto-Canada, San Jose, and Los Angeles. We were a mix of Caucasians, Latinos, and Asians, united in our decision to celebrate New Year's Eve at Rosa's. We had booked three weeks in advance, anticipating a special night where we could all dine together. Upon arrival, our expectations were dashed. We were divided between two tables. Our request to be seated together, which is typical of dining establishments, was met with resistance. The staff informed us that they couldn't accommodate groups larger than 8 at one table, citing policy—despite ample space. When we proposed that adults occupy one table and children the other, supervised by an 18-year-old, we were rebuffed again. The explanation was a firm limit of eight diners per table, no exceptions, even though the space could support more. Faced with no alternative dining options on New Year's weekend, we stayed. The situation deteriorated. The staff, including the manager, treated us not just with indifference but with outright rudeness. Our simple request to adjust the tables slightly was ignored, met instead with excuses and an air of superiority. A group of 12, all Caucasian, enjoyed their meal at a single table directly opposite us, without issue. This stark disparity led me to perceive a bias not against me or the other Caucasians , but against our Asian and Latino friends. It was a clear case of discrimination, casting a shadow over our gathering and leaving me embarrassed. It's about highlighting a negative experience, one I've never faced in over 60 years and across numerous global locations. My hope is that sharing this will prevent others from enduring what we did at Rosa's Italian Restaurant in Pismo Beach, CA.
