Claim ID: ******* This complaint is regarding the post office claim process for damaged items. I filed an online claim for a collector's item that was damaged during shipping. The item is a book. A few weeks later I received a notice that I needed to bring the item and packaging to the post office so that they could examine the damage. Upon brining the item to the ******************* I was told that they would need to take the item from me in order to possibly pay on the claim. The letter did not say I needed to surrender the item, only to bring it for inspection. My claim was for the partial value of the book, not the entire value since the damage was significant but the item was still usable. To replace the item would cost twice as what I had paid for it, so I didn't want to give upt he item and only wanted partial compensation for the damage (book was bent all the way through in a few places). The post office said I had to serender the item even though I did not claim full value as that is their process. What is the point of insurance if you can't even file a partial claim for a damaged item that you would like to keep but that has lost much of it's value due to the damage. The purpose of insurance is to pay partial claims as well and to ask me to give up an item that would cost twice as much to replace is unreasonable. My claim was only $13.50. The insured value was up to $50 but I only claimed $13.50 which was half the value of the item. I called the post office numerous times and spent nearly 2 hours trying to talk to various folks, but no one could help me and I kept getting transferred, until I just gave up. About a week ago I received a letter stating that my claim was denied because I failed to provide the item to the post office for inspection. This is not fair! I brought the item for inspection to san ***** but was told I needed to surrender it. I will not give up an item for half its value as it would cost twice as much to replace.
