          Case 3:22-cv-3070

          On May 25, 2022, Twitter, Inc. settled complaint (case 3:22-cv-3070), brought against the company by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

          The settlement stems from the FTC’s allegations that Twitter used data obtained from users on the pretext that the information was needed for security purposes, but allowed advertisers to use the data to target specific users with ads. This was in violation of a 2011 FTC order, that prohibited Twitter from misrepresenting it’s privacy and security practices.

                    In addition to the $150 million penalty, Twitter is prohibited from profiting from deceptively collected data, will allow users to use multi-factor authentication methods,  will notify users that it misused phone numbers and emails collected, will implement and maintain a privacy and information program, will limit employee access to  users’ personal data and to notify FTC of any data breaches.
