Consumers have reported to BBB that after responding to an ad in their local newspaper for an employment opportunity to have your vehicle wrapped with local ads they are contacted by Media-396. Consumers further explain that they are mailed a check for about $3,450 dollars with instructions to send $3100 dollars to a graphic artist via MoneyGram or Wal-Mart transfer. Consumers are asked to initially take out and send $500 dollars of the $3,450 for a deposit until the funds clear. Consumers have reported that after a few days their bank contacts them to inform them the check was fraudulent and has bounced.
BBB cautions consumers to be aware of employment scams involving checks. Scammers often target job seekers with enticing "work from home" opportunities and will provide the job seeker with a check, explaining that the funds are to be used to purchase prepaid cards or to be transferred back to the employer. The reason many scammers prefer these payment methods is that money transferred by either of these means is not traceable and cannot be retrieved once sent. These fake checks never clear the bank, but scammers count on you withdrawing the money from your account before the check is found to be fraudulent. Once this fake check is discovered you will be left with an overdrawn bank account and the scammer will be no where to be found.
