I purchased a big Agnes copper spur ul tent a couple of years ago for $550 and used it four times. Part of the reason I was willing to pay that kind of money is due to the claimed life time warranty. I've been backpacking for 45 years and maintain my equipment meticulously. Recently on an 11 day trip through the sierras, while laying in my sleeping bag, I noticed the zipper slowly delaminating from the tent body. Of course, it was in the middle of the trip, and I had to deal with mosquitos coming in the tent due to the zipper defect. When I got home, I sent the tent back to big agnes for warranty work. They took a look at the tent and said "we don't feel we can stand behind a repair on the tent so we will sell you another one and we'll give you a discount. I could not believe what I was hearing. Their solution to their manufacturing defect was to sell me another tent. When I pushed them on it, they said that they didn't think it was a manufacturing defect. Keep in mind the tent was used 4 times and well taken care of. Their warranty says satisfaction guaranteed and that they will repair or refund the original price. When I told them that I didn't want to pay for another tent and that I would prefer a refund and I would use the money to go buy another tent from another manufacturer, they said no, but we'd be happy to send you the defective tent back. This is a case of the old bait and switch if there ever was one. I'd like for you to contact the company and go over the details for yourself. I have copies of their emails as well.
