I ordered two cords of firewood from Ernest last year for my fireplace and was very impressed with the quality and quantity. This year, my gas furnace broke, and I decided to use it as an opportunity to switch my primary heat source to wood, and got a wood stove insert. Since heating my home and preventing the pipes from freezing depended on quality wood that is ready to burn, I couldn't think of anyone else to order from, and this year I ordered three full cords. While you should never expect to get more than what you order - I certainly don't - I was pleasantly surprised last year that he delivered appeared to be more than 2 full cords I ordered; confirmed it was more than 2 full cords after I stacked (most of it) and measured with a tape measure. This year, I haven't yet stacked all of it, but from what I have stacked and measured and seeing what remains in the pile, I am certain that this time, again, it is more than three cords. The *quality*, however, is what really sets his firewood a cut above the rest. Divided into the following categories: Seasoning: Ernest's firewood is always seasoned and in good condition. That is in contrast to my past experience - at least in this part of the country - of firewood merchants/landscaping companies selling either horribly green wood (one popular landscaping company up here sold me firewood so green it actually bubbled and steamed when I tried to add it to an already hot fire) or, if I'm "lucky," wood that is fully seasoned but wasn't kept out of the elements and while burnable is covered in mold, dirt, and sometimes insects. Cut/Size: Ernest will do his best to accommodate any length you request, which is unique among firewood companies. Of course, not all logs will be exactly the same length. (This is cord wood, not a Space X Falcon 9- if you want "perfectly" sized and "pretty" logs, go get some kiln dried… though I do not recommend that if you burn firewood even remotely seriously because kiln dried will deposit a lot more creosote than quality seasoned wood.) The split is also very good… Ernest tends to split on the larger width end of the spectrum; that is ideal because the *only* alternative is to end up with miscellaneous pieces too small for anything but kindling. You can always split a wide log down a little more if you want, I wouldn't recommend trying to glue kindling together into a Frankenstein's Log. Hardwood: This is *all* mixed hardwood. Many firewood merchants will slip in pine, fir, etc, and while it's fine to burn softwoods, they are much cheaper and they burn much, much faster, so you're not getting your money's worth if you're not getting all hardwood… and if you rely on firewood for heat, the way I do, you'll be constantly feeding your wood burning stove/furnace/etc. Last year the delivery included a lot of cherry, with a good amount of maple and oak. This year there was a good amount of cherry and maple, and predominantly oak. If you need quality firewood, call Ernest to see if he delivers to your area. You will not be disappointed.
