I hired this company to build an addition in November of 2022 after meeting with a project manager. Things started going badly on day 1 of the job when the PM told me about all the guys he just had to fire, leaving us with what turned out to be inept framers. Digging and construction began in December, even though permits had not been approved by the town yet. I was told they'd be approved very soon, and that this type of thing happens all the time. They continued to frame until Feb. when the town shut them down. Between Feb and May nothing happened, besides me cleaning up the mess they left. I would reach out to Tom, who had since fired that PM or he quit depending on who you ask, and I was told the town was making him jump through hoops but the structure was okay. I parted ways with Tom after he tried to force me to pay a bill for an engineer. The town needed an engineer to produce plans for how to FIX the disaster they built. There was more done wrong than right. I've had multiple professionals look at what they did and they are all amazed by how poorly it was built. "Unprofessional" was a word commonly used. Long story short, I've hired a new contractor but my experience with Tom the Toolman was a nightmare. The guys who actually did the work are amateurs at best. Tom does not know building code, how to build, or how to run a company. He was in way over his head and I'm glad I have a new contractor who knows what he's doing. Tom will most likely reply to this complaint claiming that he would have fixed the problems if given a chance. But how can you trust someone when they've repeatedly displayed their ineptitude? This is the guy who was willing to walk away from a project over $2,000. His apologies over the delays were just lip service. Never did he offer any sort of compensation for putting me and my family through this nightmare experience. I'd rather pay somebody else more money to get the job done right than give Tom another dime.

Contracted with Tom for our only bathroom. I made several mistakes including not getting a detailed quote. After a 37% down payment, they started the bathroom job on 5/23/22 & it took 5 months to complete! Proper town permits were only obtained after I had to push to get them. The shower drain leaked terribly into the garage, had to be taken out & replaced. Electrical work was improper & had to be replaced. Wrong floor tile installed & had to be taken out. Terrible inconvenience for several months. Now realize that the cost was too high. Tom has now decided that the job is done and things went nicely. I have a damaged sink & he plans to place a mechanics lien on the house due to a remaining balance of $1,900 after paying him over $27,000 for a 6 ft x 9 ft bathroom. Stay away from Tom the Toolman Tyler. He does not know the business, is arrogant and is not customer orientated. Would not recommend him to anyone. Professional work expected for money spent. Not the case here. Update: Mechanics lien is in favor of contractor. Paid Tom the Tyler Toolman except for unsigned change order. He responded that he would place the remaining$425 into collections. Paid the $425 just to be done with him. Stay away from doing business with him. He did not care that our only bathroom took 5 months. No apology. Not a customer orientated business nor run professionally.

********* I am truly sorry that you are now not happy with the beautiful bath you have. I know you previously said you were thrilled with it, so not sure what happened there. I am sorry for the time it took to get your custom shower glass doors but we knew it would take some time. We did take extra time to make things right that you noticed or changed along the way. I know its hard doing a remodel in your home and I think you would agree we took what ever time needed in an attempt to make you happy with all the details you brought up. Again I am not sure where this went wrong for you but the items you speak of were decided in advance and agreed to, we would expect to be fairly paid per our agreement.

      Customer Response

This project should have never taken 5 months, and the fact that you find this acceptable says it all. You did not take out permits (until repeated inquires) that we did not pass a town inspection, poor quality, communication and incorrect work by your subcontractors speaks volumes. We paid for a professional quality renovation, in our opinion we did not get this. The fact that after all of the problems including $27,000 paid, you would communicate actions via a mechanics lien and collections for $1,950 shows your lack of care/consideration for us as your customer. You never came to see the “finished renovation” and ignored my request to discuss concerns. After having renovations over the last 38 years the issue is not about money owed or paid. The issue is about how to conduct a proper business, do quality work and the customer relationship.
