In September 2022 I contracted with Backyard Works to have a gate installed in the fence around our pool. During the 9 months I waited, I called repeatedly to get an update on the status. Most often calls were not returned. Finally after approximately six months they discovered the gate had not been ordered. The gate was finally installed in June 2023. There are several problems that I have not been able to have resolved. You cannot unlock the gate from inside the yard because you cannot see where to insert the key. Once again I have called numerous times trying to get this resolved. They did send someone once and he came with a replacement lock, but it was the exact lock we already had. The gate also does not close automatically, which is required by law for a gate into a pool area. Apparently the hinges are bad. I paid $1,390 for this gate. I have left numerous messages for the owner, Ryan, none of which have been returned. I definitely would not recommend this company.Review from Mark R

This was the third time I have had Backyard Works provide there services and all three have been perfect outcomes. They installed a fence and pavers in my backyard and everything was done professionally and it looks fantastic. The owner and staff were very professional and very friendly and when they gave me a date that the job would be completed it was completed on that date or before. I would definitely recommend Backyard Works. They are five star company. Mark RolloReview from Parker H

Extremely unprofessional months late on doing work for what I'm assuming are money problems since they have the mentality of 15 year olds. They don't seem to care about the customer at all they also had my wife's review she left with photos of their poor work and disrespectful communications flagged as spam an taken down off Google that should really tell you all you need to know about a company I'm sure they will leave a reply to this with the attitude of a child instead of ever consider fixing their businessBackyard Works Response

Not sure where this came from considering we completed your job along with your neighbors fence (shared fence line) in 2022. Over a year ago. For the most part - all of our communication was between your neighbor, not you. Additionally, per the contract and in writing, the job was completed within the time frame as proposed. Matter of fact, I believe we had to chase you for final payment. Regarding Google - I/we have zero control over removing reviews. I'm sure you can write another BBB review for Google, in your free time. I'm sorry you had an unpleasant experience with our company however, the feeling is very much mutual. Have a great day!Review from Lisa F.

This company was the most unprofessional company that I have dealt with in Delaware thus far. Disappointed that they did not adhere to their provisions of their contract. Firstly, they did not show up for their scheduled appointment to put in a fence as they were contracted to do. Nor did they call to inform me that they did not plan to come that particular day. I had to call after waiting several hours. Secondly, when they did finally show up to put in the fence, they ended up breaking my irrigation line. Of course, due to their negligence (as the contract states) they are not liable, and it is incumbent on the customer to rectify it. This held the project up even more. Thirdly, they had the audacity to go the HOA to ask them to fix it. They were not given permission to do so. All proper paperwork was filed with the HOA prior to the construction of the fence. The fence was finally complete after a couple of weeks. I was not happy with the service, so I had asked to speak to the owner. The owner was the nastiest, most unprofessional individual I have ever dealt with regards to a contractor. I would avoid this business at all costs. He also informed me that if the other half of the bill was not paid in fifteen (15) days the warranty on the fence would be null and void. You will be able to tell what type of professional businessman he is after he reads this review and responds. My advice, look elsewhere avoid the headache.Backyard Works Response

Oh Lisa.... Let us state some facts first Backyard Works arrived to start your job and you turned the install crew away stating a shed was being delivered that YOU wanted installed before the fence, which you had not previously communicated to Backyard Works. Install was rescheduled by several weeks until the time that you said the shed was in place. Once rescheduled, Miss Utility (marking public utility lines for safety) was re- notified as per law. Irrigation lines are NOT marked by Miss Utility as those lines are considered PRIVATE as stated in your contract. Once the irrigation line was damaged, there seemed to be confusion on YOUR part as to who was responsible to repair. While the Operations Manager was at your home discussing this irrigation issue, YOU began to yell/scream and throw household items. The Operations Manager left YOUR home in fear of being struck by those items. The HOA was then contacted to verify whether the irrigation was yours or the community’s; Backyard Works contact with the HOA DID NOT require your permission. Once the HOA was contacted regarding the irrigation issue, Backyard Works was informed that YOU as the homeowner never received their approval, as outlined in YOUR HOA documents, to install a fence on your property. The fact that all proper paperwork was submitted DID NOT constitute Approval or permission by the HOA. Once the irrigation was repaired by YOUR HOA and you notified Backyard Works of such, the project was scheduled for completion within a week. Once completed, YOU were sent your final invoice and office staff called to follow up on the final payment. When you began to voice your complaints to the staff, they responded to your complaints by pointing out some of the same above facts. YOU became belligerent and argumentative demanding to speak to the owner. It was explained to you that you would have better luck discussing the issues with the General Manager (to whom you were actually speaking) than with the actual owner. Once the owner picked up the phone to speak with you, YOUR belligerence escalated as accusations that YOU that continued to spew were being addressed by the owner with again some of facts above. YOU became further enraged, as the facts were presented yet again, screaming through the phone at him; at which time, he chose NOT to continue to be verbally abused, told you to “Have a nice day”, and HUNG UP. BTW, As of 3/15/23 YOUR final balance has not been paid. Final payment is expected upon completion. You may want to reread your contract again. Lastly, you're in the top 5 of the Rudest/ Difficult people we have ever done work for.Review from marvin m

Stood me up for appointment to give an estimate, then stopped responding to my messages. Obviously they are to busy to need work and don't care enough to even apologize for wasting my time. There are many other contractors out there, don't waste your time here.Backyard Works Response

After a request for compensation due to an install that was 8 weeks late, this is the response I received. Personal attacks and threats - completely unprofessional. You have some nerve. How about you pay your bill or I’ll come over there and rip the fence out and you won’t have to worry about paying your invoice! We all knew you were going to play this game. I am so shocked that I am reading this email. You are so shallow. BTW, if you decide not to pay within 15 days of completion - you’ll be forfeiting your warranty and I’ll be turning over for collections. All stated in your contract. Then, you have the gaul to ask us to repair the damage!!?? Not a very well played or thought out move. RLBackyard Works Response

Oh, Amy.... Please... Lets not forget to let EVERYONE know what we had to chase you to get paid, gave us the wrong credit card info, avoided our phone calls from the office only to be answered by our office cell phone. And, let's not forget that your BF made threats against me. It wasn't until I responded to your ridiculous demand of a 20% reduction in payment you paid your invoice. I thought we were passed this especially after you were slammed on FB. I didn't think you wanted me to air your dirty laundry all over the internet but, I tell it like it is, again. Customer isn't always right especially when they try and worm out of paying their final invoice and play games.Review from Rhonda H.

Aug 25, 2021 I received an email from ***** ****** for Fencing Estimate no 1381 that said "Since you paid the deposit that puts you on our install que (sic)". As of January 8th, 2022 Backyard Works had still not established an install date. I cancelled the installation. They will be taking out 25% of my deposit for "restocking fee". Since vinyl fencing installations are so expensive, do you think it is possible for a company to stay afloat from just getting estimates and keeping the 25% deposits? I'm told the remaining deposit will be returned within 30 days of my cancellation, but given it was six months and never got a scheduled date of installation, do you really think I'll get the rest of my money back?Backyard Works Response

The remaining deposit will NOT be returned. You canceled. Read your contract. Best of luck finding another contractor!Review from M D I M.

I explained to Jason that I needed railings etc so my handicapped daughter would be able to get put the front door in case of an emergency. Jason said it would probably be 6-8 weeks for an install. Of course I asked if there was any way possible for a sooner install and he said he’d see what he can do. The next day I recd an estimate that seemed overprice but I needed the job done and accepted the quote. I was immediately transferred to ***** who works in the office she said I had to pay 1/2 of the job or $1250 I paid immediately. I also explained to her the urgency she also said 6-8 weeks. Had t heard from anyone from that point on until I started calling to try to reach someone.I left Jason a voicemail and didn’t hear from him so I called and spoke Kyle who transferred me to ***** again she said I told you 6-8 weeks I’ll call you next week. Well next week she never called. Then on July 9th there was a dishwasher fire in my kitchen and my daughter couldn’t get out the front door thank hod I made it home in time to get her out with no injuries. I called again and spoke to Kyle explained what occurred and the urgency for the railings etc he said ***** was in a meeting and he ll have her call me . Well didn’t receive a call from her. I called the other day and ***** answered I told her who I was and she acted like she didn’t know why I was calling I said didn’t Kyle tell you I called she said yes he said you were having issues at that point it couldn’t believe how unprofessional and the lack of empathy and cancelled the order. Now they want to charge me 25% for a restocking fee. And after cancellation all of a sudden telling me I was scheduled next week which would be 11 weeks since I paid the deposit. I told Bobbi I would dispute it and her response was dispute away. She would gladly contact her lawyer. She has to be related I can’t believe a reputable business would employ such a rude person who speaks to their customers like she doesBackyard Works Response

You are correct - You were on the installation schedule for the week of the 9th. However, you failed to type some truthful information. So, let me help you.... Since the pandemic our lead times due to materials and labor has been extended to 8-10 weeks. We have NEVER operated on a 6 week lead time for any of our projects. NEVER. Matter of fact, every customer is informed of this, AGAIN, at the time of initial deposit giving them the option to move forward or cancel - EVERYONE. Lastly and most importantly, YOU signed an electronic contract that clearly states there would be a 25% restocking fee if you canceled AFTER your 3 day rescission. I'm sorry but, I'm not Home Depot or Walmart where you can simply just return something with no questions asked. You're angry because you didn't get your way so, lets turn to social media along with the worthless BBB and stomp our feet. Wish you well with your project!
