Took my AKAI reel-to-reel to Audio Workshop (AW) 06-21-22 to check why the right UV meter wasn't working. I had to pay $80 for them to check the problem. AW called me at the end of September telling me my unit was ready to be picked up. When I got there, the unit that was ready, was not mine; they finally admitted they hadn't touched mine, so I left leaving the unit for them to check. In October, they called me to pick up my unit; when I got there, I was told it would cost $400 to fix it, but they said they really didn't want to work on it; so I brought it home. I plugged in my reel-to-reel and the unit would not work at all. IT WAS COMPLETELY NON-FUNCTIONAL! I called AW and was told to bring the unit back to them. AW had the unit for another month calling me to let me know they didn't know what they had done to the unit that it now was not working, and for me to pick it up. I brought the unit home and when I unloaded it, I heard a rattle. I took the back off and there was a 5X6 PLASTIC SQUARE CONTAINER STUFFED INSIDE THE ***** My ******** took the plastic container to AW and told *************************, owner, this was unacceptable and I was mad. He gave me my $80 back and $20 for gas. While re-checking my unit, I noticed several parts were now missing; 4 rubber feet, screws, s**** cups. When I called *****, he told me to bring the unit back to him and he would try to fix it for me, he wanted to help. I took the unit back the week before Thanksgiving and ***** said he would have it done the following week; three weeks later I called ***** and he told me to pick up the unit; he couldn't fix it; it's not working.I've had other reels during the last 35 years, my AKAI was over 30 years old. This is a collectable unit; to replace it would cost $1900-$2000. ***** laughed at me and said "that's what they can ask, but they won't get that". THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED A COLLECTABLE! I now own a piece junk!
