The company bought out the local business that operated the location. Since then, the company has increased prices by 50% in two years, but it has not made a single improvement to the aging facility. I stand corrected: The parking lot was repaved. Who cares about that???No one is ever available by phone or in person when needed. The late fees are outrageously high.I am likely find another storage company. If I could award 0 stars, I would.

I was an invited guest by one of your renters to help him count comic books he recently inherited from his son, who tragically passed away recently. I charged NOTHING for this service, nor was ANY of this persons property EVER offered to me for sale, etc. I was doing this as a favor to his son, who has been a long-time client of mine. In the middle of helping your client (a registered minister, who is a senior citizen, and his wife), I was approached by your employee who told me I had to leave. I asked WHY, and he said "you can't conduct business here." I assured him I was only helping him count his comic books, and refused to accept compensation for my time. I do NOT take advantage of people out of grief. Your client ALSO confirmed this, and said he was not interested in selling ANYTHING out of the storage unit, he merely wanted to know what he had. The next step was for your employee to tell me he was going to call the police and have me forcibly removed from the premises. Keep in mind, I was entirely inside the storage unit, I was invited, and it was after-hours. There was zero indication of ANY business being conducted, nor was there any reason to suspect that business was conducted. PERIOD. Regardless, I was escorted off of your property without reason, recourse or explaination. When the renters asked to see the copy of the lease, they were flatly refused. NOBODY should be threatened with a call from the police without cause. PERIOD. I would also suggest STRONG disciplinary action against this individual. He was approximately 6' 1". sandy blond hair, thin, early 30s with glasses. I would be AGHAST if someone like that EVER worked for me, much less threaten police involvement without any cause OR evidence. I DID NOT break and enter, I was INVITED. PERIOD.

Storage Sense, 119 Foster St., Peabody, Mass. Do you like Fear Factor? A little over ten years ago my mother was dying. I had to move things out of her house and into storage, and many items were very sentimental. There were large paintings, too, and all of it meant climate control and cleanliness were absolutely necessary. I live in New York City, so I needed a place I could trust since I wouldn't be checking my storage unit regularly. And, I knew my things would be there for a while, both for practical and emotional reasons. When I signed the contract with the storage facility, they assured me of their cleaning practices and of their climate control. About three years ago I visited Salem and dropped by my unit. It was a cool day, and when I rolled the door to my storage unit up things looked okay. I didn't touch or move anything. Then, this past August a mover and I rented a truck, and drove to Peabody to clear it out. The first sign that something was amiss was the temperature inside the facility. It was a balmy blend of humidity and mid-80s heat, filled with that unmistakeable 'dead mouse' scent. I've lived in NYC a long time and not much fazes me; gross here is unprintable versus the sweet and nostalgic gross I grew up with in my small Massachusetts town. But that scent put me on alert that something felt very wrong. A long time ago there was a SNL skit with Dana Carvey and John Larocette, where JL is on his way to heaven and DC is his angel. JL asks, "What's the grossest thing I ever ate?" DC responds, "Oh, you don't want to know that." JL says, "What's the 200th grossest thing I ever ate?" And Dana Carvey replies, "Some butterscotch pudding that had a dead earwig in it." This scene went through my mind as I rolled up the door to my storage unit. As before, everything looked to be in place. The plastic I draped over my Grandmother's Victorian hand-carved loveseat hadn't moved. My Mother's table and dresser seemed fine. The plastic draped over my Ampeg Superjet amp, a relic when I got it, looked good. The mover and I started with the large paintings. They had been stored on thick slats of wood to keep them off the floor and let air circulate around them. We moved two paintings out, and on the floor, between the slats, it looked like a bag of black bird seed had gotten into my unit and exploded. We moved two more paintings out and saw that what we were looking at wasn't seed, but a major infestation of mouse droppings. Here and there laid giant dead cockroach husks. Panicked, I quickly looked at the backs of the paintings. A dead centipede hung off one. Desiccated carcasses hung off another. Mold ran down a third. In the back corners of the paintings, the hidden space between the canvas and the stretcher had become a pocket of poo. Between the heat and humidity, it was fetid as all f-- My mover freaked. I freaked. I looked at my Grandmother's loveseat, anxious to take the plastic off and see what I might find. My Grandmother was a classic New Englander, who believed flat ginger ale and a cool breeze fixed everything. She had immigrated to Salem as a young girl and this loveseat came with her. It had been in our family forever. Prior to storage, the upholstery had been in pretty good condition given its age--it looked original, but until the space/time continuum works itself out I can't go back and confirm this. Though it didn't matter anymore. Mouse excrement filled every hollow on the love seat, and something--Mold? Mouse urine?--left a sheen so foul I knew the fabric was unsalvageable. The gentleman working at Storage Sense, Chris, was the only high point of moving day, since he was as horrified as we were and gave us every disinfectant he had for our hands. He told me Storage Sense had taken over from the last owner, and they inherited the mouse issue from an incident with a long gone tenant. He said it was under control now, yet my mover saw mouse droppings in every doorway of every unit we passed. And the metal mouse trap near the elevator reeked. I didn't bother to ask why there was no climate control. I had to leave behind a painting and an expensive wooden frame, given the vermin damage to both. Once I got my belongings out it took a month to clean and salvage what I could. I lost four more paintings to mold. If I had lashed my belongings to a 2 by 4 and left them on a median strip, I would understand their condition. Instead, I paid thousands of dollars over the years to mostly house what looked like a mouse and roach party.
