Our driveway is now a giant bowl that fills up with water whenever it rains and it will cost us $4,200 to install drains to fix it! Job Finished Dec 17th, 2023. We had a simple driveway job in a house that's been around since 1980. The original concrete driveway drained off to the north side, which is what we told owner of Curb Appeal Ralph *****, expecting the same drainage design with his pavers. What we ended up with was a driveway that pitched from both sides to the middle? There is a small opening in the middle of the driveway pavers for our water main similar to the previous driveway. This had never been a "drain" in the previous driveway, there was no pitch to the middle before, so there had never been an issue of water accumulating. The new design fills in minutes of a hard rain and sits for sometimes 24 hours before dissipating. After sending photos of our driveway full of water after only 30 minutes of rain, water that is ankle deep in the middle but still had not reached the sides of the driveway, Curb Appeal Hardscaping is now blaming us for the issue and refuses to fix it, or help us with the cost of the drain installation. We even have millimeter accurate 3D measurements from a FARO Focus 3D laser scanner of before and after to show the design difference. In total we have had four different companies come out to look at our options and all of them have told us that the design is incorrect.

Apon arrival to the said customers home , I discussed with the homeowner that his driveway had what’s called a “valley pitch” design. It had a large gravel pit in the center of it ( as shown on instant street view)for drainage purposes. The customers home is set much lower than the asphalted road which is direct oceanfront. The customer discussed that he wanted the gravel drainage area minimized as much as I could. I explained that the driveway run off would need to drain into that area as well as out to the grass. The driveway pitched from the house to the center of the driveway and from the road to the center of the driveway originally and after we completed the pavers. I explained that the gravel bed he wanted to reduce was an integral part of his drainage, he insisted that he wanted it gone and to only leave the water meter with minimal gravel around it . The customer also mentioned that he was planning on doing artificial turf on either side of driveway edge. I explained that that would mean they would be building additional base material as an underlayment on either side of the driveway which intern, would have no drainage at all as the sub base used for this turf application is that same as pavers. At which time I told him that now none of his yard would have anywhere to drain . We spoke at length about this situation prior to doing the job and now the customer realized a little too late and he shouldn’t have done away with the drainage area. We always strive to make all of customers happy and to give them the knowledge ahead of time. It is unfortunate that he didn’t want us to fix it because there would be a fee involved. The customer made the final decision against my opinion. Then he decided that he wanted to get estimates to add drainage after he build up the outer edge for turf or grass installation. He contacted me to split the cost, I refused as this was his decision to eliminate the drainage area in the center of driveway with the valley pitch that already existed. Our inspections passed with the county. We are very well known with the county and cities for our outstanding work .
