Billing for equipment prior to obtaining documentation that meets Medicare's own criteria is strictly forbidden and a violation of the state of Florida and Medicare's licensing standards.
A prescription from a doctor with chart notes documenting a patient would benefit from specific equipment, does not immediately qualify a person to receive equipment paid for by Medicare.
As we explained many times there is qualifying criteria that must be met and well documented by the doctor for Medicare to pay for equipment. The documentation provided by your doctor did not meet Medicare's criteria. The billing specialist spoke to the doctor's office twice and your doctor indicated that they wouldn't change their current assessment of why you needed the walker.
After explaining that we could not bill Medicare you were given the option to pay cash or find another DME company to purchase the walker.
You were treated professionally and generously considering the way you treated the employees that were trying to help you. After threatening to sue our billing specialist, management got involved.
Had we provided you with a walker, billed Medicare knowing that we did not have the necessary documentation and gotten paid by Medicare for that walker; that would have been Medicare fraud or as you stated, "ripping Medicare off." Other companies may submit fraudulent claims; we will not.
