    I had a preventative procedure done at AdventHealth Ocala, which should be covered in full before deductible and without cost sharing by my insurance plan. The hospital coded this procedure incorrectly, as there were no preventative codes applied, leaving me with an additional balance after already having pre-paid $1000 which should be returned. When I called the billing department, they agreed to review the coding and came back saying it was correct. They also said that because it had been reviewed and found to be correct, the only thing I could do is write a letter disputing the bill. They could not provide me with any direct contact information other than the address for a PO Box to send a dispute letter. I am willing to send that letter, but this is something that could be resolved much more easily with a phone call or email. Not only was this handled poorly in this instance, but the protocol in general lends itself to discrimination against patients based on their resources and abilities.

    My mother was recently discharged and did not receive any further information regarding follow up care. She was evaluated by speech therapy who recommended she receive their services 7 days a week; however, she never saw them again after the initial evaluation and didn’t receive any instructions regarding outpatient therapy. Case management never came back to assist us after the first day. They never assisted us in finding her a primary care physician or with information regarding medication refills. We finally found a pcp on our own and can’t be seen until May 2024, which leaves her without care until that time. We expressed these concerns several times to the floor nurse and virtual nurse; however, their efforts to voice our concerns were ignored by the physicians and case management. The nurses and PCTs were the best part of the hospital stay, and we do not have any grievances with them. The neurologist gave limited information/explanations in person, but had additional info added in the notes in MyChart that needed explaining. The attending physician discharged without addressing the speech therapy, but ordered labs after signing for the discharge order. There was an additional diagnosis added with two additional medications as we received the discharge paperwork to leave, but neither physician made us aware of the last minute changes. They never came back to discuss why the labs were suddenly ordered at discharge or inform us that it prompted a new diagnosis with two additional medications. I have already contacted reached out to case management and the patient advocate, but could only leave voicemail messages. I do not know if I will receive a call back or not. But I will also follow up with my mother’s insurance company.
