BBB conducted an investigation based on a recent Scam Tracker report concerning billing issues. The consumer alleged after placing an order, the business continued asking for additional money claiming payment was not received.

“I was looking for rifle ammunition on-line. I found a website while searching on Google, "Lucky Ammo Store" (luckyammostore.com), - I made an initial order of 4 boxes of ammunition, but when I went to purchase, only Zelle or direct bank account transfers were possible for payment. Also, a minimum of $150 per order was possible... I should has stopped there. - I changed my order to 10 boxes of ammunition for a total cost of $240. After I made the transaction, an email was sent to me from "[email protected]" with the Zelle info for the money transfer. The original email address was for the "cashier" conducting the transaction. This is the original email address sent to me: [email protected]. I made the Zelle transfer. A few minutes after I started getting text messages stating that the money has not been received yet... I stated that it was complete from my end, the money has been taken out of my bank account. - I received more texts asking for screenshots of the transaction because they have not received the money yet. I sent pictures, keeping my personal info out of the screenshot. - I received another text stating "that I almost got a girl fired because I used the wrong email address". The text stated the email address was misspelled and that I should send another $240 using the correct email address (stated as: xxxxxxxxxx @gmail.com). - I was called by someone with a Milwaukee, WI area code (414) 367-4175 with an Indian accent stating the I made the mistake and my original Zelle transaction would be refunded automatically after "7" days, He stated I should send more money using the "correct" cahiers email address again... - Zelle transactions are to be refunded after 14 days if the receiving email is not enrolled with Zelle. It has been over 3 weeks now and no refund. - A quick search on the internet shows the Homestead, FL address for Lucky Ammo Store does not exist... - I filed complaint with Capital One, but I may never get my money back. - This is scam website and must be reported.”

This business only accepts payment through Bitcoin, Zelle, CashApp, and Venmo.

Scammers have found a way to use these apps, using variations on old schemes tailored to the new technology.

Peer-to-peer payment services allow users to send money to each other from an app on their mobile device. These services use a linked bank account or credit or debit card. However, unlike more traditional banking systems, many payment apps will not shoulder the cost of fraud. This means that someone who paid scammers using one of these services may not be successful in getting the company to reimburse them for their losses to the fraud.
